Educating teachers on
the lesson study model, giving them the choice of whether or not to participate, and providing monetary support for those who chose to participate were, therefore, all key elements in attracting teachers to LSG participation.
Teachers in the school district from which the examples in this paper came were not required to participate, but all of them did so after learning about
the lesson study model.

a lesson study model, used it in their preparatory program, and then brought this lesson study model into the work they do with teachers at their school.

While this might be a reality in many schools across the country, the most important
lesson I take away from my graduate
studies experience centers on replacing this
model of leadership with one that focuses on collaboration and empowerment.

Studies by Brown et al. (2001), Frechtling and Katzenmeyer (2001), Glazer et al. (2006), and Wallace et al. (1999) provided findings about the impact of teacher leader training programs on teacher leaders» practices with teachers (including demonstration
lessons or
modeling).
In a review of the published literature, fourteen research
studies were identified of teacher leader programs in which teacher leaders engage in demonstration
lesson or
modeling as an instructional support strategy.
Studies in this set provided evidence of teacher leaders who provided demonstration
lessons or
modeling as one of their support strategies had positive impact on teachers» classroom instruction and student achievement.
Studies by Gersten and Kelly, (1992), Gigante and Firestone (2007), Race et al. (2002), and Vesilind and Jones (1998) showed that teacher leader practices, including demonstration
lessons or
modeling, had a positive impact on teachers» classroom practice.
The findings across these four
studies suggested that demonstration
lessons or
modeling were employed by teacher leaders, but were not as widespread as less «formal» practices and that the occurrence of demonstration
lessons decreased over time.
Among these
studies, demonstration
lesson or
modeling appeared in various ways: one set investigated the impact of an intervention (such as teacher leader training) or teacher leader content knowledge on teacher leader practices including demonstration
lesson or
modeling; another set of
studies examined the relationship between teacher leader practices, such as demonstration
lesson or
modeling, and changes in teachers» classroom practice and student learning outcomes.
In each of the fourteen
studies, demonstration
lesson or
modeling was investigated as part of a set of teacher leader instructional support strategies and not focused on the unique contribution of demonstration
lesson or
modeling as a specific strategy.
In the fourteen
studies in which the teacher leader practice of conducting demonstration
lessons or
modeling was present, other strategies to provide instructional support to teachers were generally also identified as teacher leader practice.
The
studies also suggested that teacher leaders who participated in preparation programs that included opportunities to practice strategies such as demonstration
lesson or
modeling were likely to use those strategies.
While pedagogical excellence begins during training, the demands of the public sector are such that the transformation often associated with Montessori professional formation requires an extended period of apprenticeship supported by a professional community that is equipped to induct novices through
modeling, collaborative child and
lesson study, and ongoing reflection, coaching, and targeted professional development.
For the project described in this paper, the decision to use
lesson study as a professional development
model was agreed upon during discussions with teacher and administrator representatives.
Lesson study can also be adapted for use with preservice teachers (Marble, 2007), so the LS - TPACK
model need not be limited solely to the assessment of in - service education for high school mathematics teachers.
Stigler and Hiebert (1999) drew attention to
lesson study as a
model of professional development in their comparison of mathematics education in the U.S. and Japan.
The assessment
model built on this process will be referred to as the
Lesson Study TPACK (LS - TPACK)

model can be of great help in providing structure and protocols for the collaborative work.
