Common
Core is a new set of
academic standards adopted by New York's Board of Regents in 2010, outlining which math and English skills students should be able to demonstrate at each grade
level.
Students at each grade
level are scheduled together as a cohort to take a
core set of
academic classes and a technical class related to the theme of the academy (e.g., biotechnology, business, electronics, engineering, health, information technology, media and communications, among many others).
As Heather Staker and I have written, the models of blended learning most likely to scale into the
core academic subjects at all
levels of schooling in the near term are sustaining innovations, in which online learning is essentially an augmentation to the traditional classroom, but there is still a fundamental shift in the learning model from the student's perspective.

Core standards
academic goals for what students should be able to do in reading and math at each grade
level to ensure high school students graduate ready for the demands of higher education and the 21st century workforce.
Should states adopt a two - tiered diploma, in which students who pass internationally aligned Common
Core exams at a career - and college - ready
level receive an «
academic» diploma, while students who fail to meet that bar receive a «basic» diploma?
The Common
Core State Standards did a good job of cumulating to college and (they said) career readiness by the end of high school, but that's only helpful if states use those or equally rigorous
academic standards and if the assessments based on such standards are truly aligned with them, have rigorous scoring standards, and set their «cut scores» at
levels that denote readiness for college -
level work.
Enrollment has climbed, on - time graduation rates have risen from 39 to 65 percent, and the percentage of students scoring at grade
level in
core academic subjects has risen by 15 percentage points.
The Common
Core site also states that «these standards define the knowledge and skills students should have within their K - 12 education careers so that they will graduate high school able to succeed in entry -
level, credit - bearing
academic college courses and in workforce training programs.
Most notably, schools with higher
levels of per - pupil GCSE arts entries got above average results in the EBacc, Progress 8 and Attainment 8, suggesting that the best state secondary schools in England are those that combine high expectations in a
core of
academic subjects with a strong focus on the arts.

Common
Core's goal is to outline the
academic skills students are expected to demonstrate at each grade
level in order to be on track to be successful in both college and careers.
If legislation voiding the state's current
academic standards passes, Indiana will be the first state to exit the Common
Core initiative and write its own expectations for what students should know and learn at each grade
level.
At the Brooke schools, computer science is treated as a
core academic subject, taught by classroom teachers at each grade

In its 1994 Reading Assessment, the National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP), a federally supported program that tracks the performance of American students in
core academic subjects, reported that more than four out of 10 fourth - graders (42 percent) in American schools were reading at a «below basic»
level.

And for all the furor about the «Common
Core,» a welcome outcome of the recent round of improvements in state standards is that young people who actually master them will be prepared for college -
level academics.
The Schoolwide program purpose is to upgrade
core academic programs to ensure that all students are achieving high
levels of
academic proficiency.
Unfortunately, many of the most important features of the plan, such as extended learning time in
core subjects and a longer school day to include enrichment in art, music, and
