Google can target ads based on
keywords and personal search history, but Facebook's ads in the margins — for which there's no minimum budget — are ultra-refined, zeroing in on users based on age, geography, interests, education
level, connections and a range of other
data.
However, on the search
data front, one can see customer profitability at the
keyword or individual
level, most platforms can do it, but I will agree that real customer
data trumps everything.
How It's Useful: Google Insights for Search shows similar trend
data to Google Trends, but takes it a step further and shows you even more detail on regional interest
levels and additional search terms that are related to your
keywords.
Use the
data to see how a
keyword search for your book's genre is trending on Google to assess the current
level of interest for teen books that you can use for running a pay - per - click AdWords campaign.
If I sit down at a conference on privacy (as I did a couple weeks ago) and start hammering away on Twitter about service
level agreements, cloud hosting, and encryption of law firm
data it's all the more likely that this network activity — while nowhere near as interesting as #GameOfThrones or #Eurovision — will have a niche impact on those
keywords.
