In the long run the limiting factor in high
levels of energy consumption will be the disposal
of the
waste heat
Mechanical engineers at the University
of California, Riverside, have reported success in using inexpensive materials to produce thermoelectric devices that transform low -
level waste heat...
For example, Organic Rankine Cycles (ORC) which operate at much higher - pressure
levels, are both larger in size and less efficient at the low temperature where the largest bulk
of waste heat is found.
Yesterday, President Obama signed an Executive Order establishing a national goal
of deploying 40 gigawatts (GW)
of new combined
heat and power (CHP) and
waste heat recovery (WHR) by the end
of 2020, a 50 percent increase from 2010 capacity
levels.
These are «fission products» and account for most
of the
heat and radioactivity in high -
level waste.
While nuclear energy is regarded as the lesser
of the two evils when compared at an emission
level to the burning
of fossil - fuels, it may trump on the containment
of the
heat process, which burns in a contained nuclear reactor through an in - ward
heat - chemical reaction called fission, but nuclear energy production is a chain from uranium mining to the toxic
waste disposal and therefore as an entire process is an equally high risk environmental option.
To say nothing
of the warming trends also noticed in, for example: * ocean
heat content *
wasting glaciers * Greenland and West Antarctic ice sheet mass loss * sea
level rise due to all
of the above * sea surface temperatures * borehole temperatures * troposphere warming (with stratosphere cooling) * Arctic sea ice reductions in volume and extent * permafrost thawing * ecosystem shifts involving plants, animals and insects
McKitrick's next analysis could make use
of these explicit adjustment factors (even though this is a US - only study, and not every country has the same
level of AC - generated
waste heat).
By rejecting 1,000 MW equivalent
of waste heat to the upper atmosphere instead
of at ground
level, it is possible to generate an additional 200 MW
of electrical energy, thereby increasing the electrical output
of a plant by 40 %.
The NYT notes concern over CO2
levels and fears that production
of energy «
heat waste» will generate so much
heat as to have a major climate impact.
Go for floor standing rather than ceiling fans to ensure the
heated air is distributed at the correct
level and to avoid
wasting energy in the form
of heated air rising to the ceiling.
