Once unlocked, you have to insert the key in the ignition to move the shift
lever out of park.

This is perhaps most noticeable when reversing
out of a
parking space: several times I pushed the throttle to back up and found it so unresponsive that I looked down at the shift
lever to make sure I had remembered to engage reverse gear — which I had, in fact, done.
The
parking brake will now automatically engage whenever the shift
lever is in
park and disengage whenever the shift
lever is moved
out of park.
Details: On cars equipped with the double clutch transmission, the actuation lock inside the gearshift
lever module may not function as designed, allowing the gearshift
lever to move
out of «
PARK» without the usual requirements
of having to step on the brake pedal and the ignition being in the «ON» position.
I also was a significantly annoyed to find that BMW's odd new shift
lever doesn't feature a «
Park» position, which led to quite a bit
of confusion when the time came to get
out of the M5 at the end
of my first drive.
Solution per the dealer was take it
out back and do a bunch
of stops using the
parking brake
lever, IIRC in reverse.
