library systems across the US from me ordered some of my own books, for example, because I've had readers tell me they found my books in their local
library, liked the covers, and tried them out and are now fans who are going on to buy
more of my work.
The market is much
more diverse,
more centered (most items are bought for K - 12 educational uses), much larger in sales than the
library market, and the K - 12 publishers aren't the Big Six but rather smaller independent firms that work far closer with the school
systems to survive.
Immediately, this step resolves the concern from many librarians that a major city's rather large
library system paying the same price as a
more rural, «small town»
library.
It could also give a boost to 3M and Overdrive's ambitions to woo even
more libraries into doing business with them and facilitate digital content delivery
systems.
