Binary models infuse our thinking
at every
level in
society, as
life is constantly split into various dichotomies
of rich / poor, traditional / contemporary, animal / human, and so on ad infinitum.
The vast majority are
at the mercy
of governmental and societal decisions as to how they
live, where they
live, and their
levels of exposure to many risks and disasters, both natural and
of society's own creation.
Banning things like smoking may seem trivial, but underpinning the banning is a fundamental shift in political culture that can be seen more broadly, operating
