Sometimes, when I try to ground my back foot, I lose
the lift of the rib cage.
(The sweeping arc of the upper body that you see in backbends is another illusion; the whole upper back looks as if it's bending, but
the lift of the rib cage is what catches your eye.)

of the scapulae is
lifted off the
rib cage.
Lift and lengthen the sides
of the
rib cage and extend your left arm up.
So, in Virabhadrasana I, the grounding
of the back leg can become a friendly invitation to the
rib cage to
lift; opening the chest can create space for the arms to reach.
Lift through the sides
of the
rib cage, the armpits, and the sternum as you look up toward the ceiling.
The expansion
of the
rib cage (without the inhalation) sucks the abdominal muscles and viscera up into the thorax and hollows the belly (some teachers say to actively but slowly
lift abdominals, or navel, toward the spine).
Then
lift your
rib cage evenly away from your pelvis to stretch the circumference
of your belly.
Thump the palms
of your hands along the sides
of your
rib cage to encourage your chest to round, puff, and
lift.
