After acquiring a permanent space in 2003, the museum began a regular exhibition program, with shows focusing on subjects
like Black Mountain's design and craft legacy and the many important female artists who once studied there, including the sculptor Ruth Asawa and the Abstract Expressionists Pat Passlof and Elaine de Kooning.
A weather, as curator Eugen Blume put it, that encourages the mood to open a school
like Black Mountain.
Like Black Mountain College, we work together as a community to make these programs happen, and we thank you for being a part of our community.
And just
like Black Mountain College's legacy, King's career defies easy categorization.

BLACK MOUNTAIN COLLEGE 1933 - 1957 The first major exhibition to examine the legacy of an experimental college that boasted teachers and students
like Anni and Josef Albers, Robert Rauschenberg and Buckminster Fuller.
It will lead visitors on a path through an enchanted but menacing landscape featuring, among other things, 17
black - faced lawn jockeys on a crystal cloudscape 18 feet in the air; 20,000 whirling wind spinners; a «waterfall» of shimmering foil -
like strips; a thousand or so intentionally garish ceramic tchotchkes; and several million beads, some of which will comprise shimmering
mountains.
Black Mountain art is the one thing that Mr. Duberman makes little mention of — what it looked
like, why it was conceived, how it was created, what it meant, what was done with it.
In the 1950s, Motherwell taught at both Hunter College in New York and
Black Mountain College in North Carolina, where soon - to - be major artists
like Cy Twombly, Robert Rauschenberg, and Kenneth Noland were students.
With neither a doctrine nor a thoroughgoing prescription for learning,
Black Mountain was more
like an intellectual and aesthetic kiln.
Much
like that poetic multiple exposure, Postcard Self - Portrait,
Black Mountain (II) explores the fleeting presence of the artist's body within the setting of the photographic frame.
When I first saw them at MoMA I harked to a felt connection between Rauschenberg's performances at
Black Mountain College on roller skates with parachute fabric and these eye -
like deep aperture spaces that owed something to tail fins and something more to the sublime eye sockets of Easter Island.
Across the picture plane, advancing and receding
mountains give way to a partially obscured,
black, lava -
like form.
Heddaya writes: «From the outside, Weathersby's pieces straddle the clinical geometry of Op art and the organic architectural character of traditional room dividers and panels,
like the Arab mashrabeya or the Japanese screen, and are unobtrusive, orderly, suggestive even of a painterly monasticism... Ken Weathersby is certainly not the first artist to have manipulated painting and denotation, or desecrated the ever - cooling corpse of canvas — the project has a distinctly vintage,
Black Mountain College feel to it — but there is a focused and exploratory energy at work in his pieces, a maturity of purpose that stands at ascetic remove from the cloying color and sloppy corporeality that too often comes to the fore in Bushwick.»
These spiky constructions — which are
like abstract root systems — were inspired by nature, as were the artworks Asawa made while a student at
Black Mountain: small oil paintings on paper, a potato print, a work in ink on paper made with a BMC (
Black Mountain College) laundry stamp.
Albers made jewelry collaboratively with a
Black Mountain College student, Alex Reed, from the parts of everyday objects and appliances,
like metal washers, bottle caps, and curtain rings.
Albers left Germany for the US in 1933, with her husband, the painter Josef Albers, to teach at the new
Black Mountain College, North Carolina, and make fabrics for design - led companies
like Knoll and Rosenthal.
Note: After this month, Pocket Utopia will close, but Austin Thomas and Norte Maar announced this week that they are working toward creating a
Black -
Mountain -
like school called Pocket U which will convene the last two weeks of July, 2010, at Rouses Point, New York.

Well, he was a wonderful lecturer and he really made you understand what his philosophy was, and you didn't... at least I didn't resent the fact that he didn't
like any other art but that art because it taught me a lot... that art taught me a lot and I got it there at
Black Mountain College.
With two keynote presentations, the contributions of over 60 scholars, curators, and artists from around the world, the Southeast Premiere of
Black Mountain Songs at Diana Wortham Theatre, and the opening of our inaugural ACTIVE ARCHIVE exhibition (Martha McDonald, Process + Performance) it is safe to say that this ReVIEWING weekend was
like nothing our museum has tackled before.
Like students and faculty did at
Black Mountain College, we work together to make our dynamic programming and vital research happen.
But seeing and hearing works created by those who taught at
Black Mountain — whether famous (notably Josef Albers, who was
Black Mountain's leading figure from the mid-1930s until 1949, and his wife Anni, a renowned weaver and fabric designer, as well as John Cage and R. Buckminster Fuller, among others) or more or less forgotten (Leo Amino, Mary Callery, José de Creeft, Joseph Fiore)-- will never reveal much about what it was
like to study there.
You might compare
Black Mountain College to liberal arts schools
like Bard, and Bennington, and maybe Skowhegan.
Nor will seeing the works of their students, even those who became as renowned as Robert Rauschenberg or Kenneth Noland, or «artist's artists»
like Ray Johnson and Pat Passlof, or even simply figures who seem to have made a profound impression on the life of the school but less so on the wider world (for instance, Dan Rice, who arrived at
Black Mountain intending to study musical composition but ended up becoming an Abstract Expressionist painter).
