When it comes to building something
like Sonic Forces, it's got such a wide fanbase - you've got people like me with greying beards, who played Sonic the Hedgehog when we were nine or ten, then you've got our kids and they want a very different thing - it must be difficult.
In fact, some games —
like Sonic Forces due in Q4 — are already announced for simultaneous release on all three formats.
We want more great gameplay, not a well developed story that bores you to tears or a game that forces you to play as other generic characters -
like sonic forces.
A consequence of this is lower frame rate, and it looks
like Sonic Forces fits the narrative.
I wanted to
like Sonic Forces.
Not exact matches
Some will cite «
Sonic the Hedgehog» with cementing their love, or more obscure classics
like «El Viento» and «Shining
Force» — for millions, it was a pair of rapping aliens that did it.
It's stupid to compare
Sonic Forces to the
likes of
Sonic 2006, Lost World or the
Sonic Boom games, but if you want a gauge of where
Sonic Forces sits, in terms of gameplay and style its closer to
Sonic Generations and
Sonic Colors — where 3D gameplay follows
Sonic from behind, along strict pathways and side scrolling gameplay features 2.5 D visuals.
Like most every 3D
Sonic game, the upcoming
Sonic Forces has its own catchy vocal theme: Fist Bump.
First, Sega took to Twitter to confirm that the Sega Ages program, lead by Studio M2, will make titles
like Sonic the Hedgehog, Thunder
Force 2 and Phantasy Star available on Nintendo Switch.
In an interview with Metro's GameCentral, Takashi Iizuka boasted confidence about both Mania and
Forces, but there's a catch: Both games are targeted at different demographics — older fans who prefer 2D
Sonic, and younger fans who
like 3D
Sonic (I'm on the latter side)-- but only the success of Mania might determine the path
Sonic will take from there on in.
Since SEGA hasn't actually released a musical lineup for the game other than composer Tomoya Ohtani, I'd
like to list some artists who might possibly contribute their music to
Sonic Forces should they be given the opportunity.
At first,
Sonic Forces» emphasis on story seems
like a refreshing shift from the predominantly simple plot lines of recent games in the series.

like yourself who have trouble running the game.
Rather than stick to the vanilla early 90s cast
like the nostalgia trip that is
Sonic Mania,
Sonic Forces brings back a bunch of characters introduced in games
like Knuckles» Chaotix,
Sonic Adventure and even
Sonic 06.
Furthermore, we also fully tested
Sonic Forces on a normal mid-range PC using all preset Graphics Settings, from Low to Ultra, so you can take a look and see what they look
like - and how it runs.
The
Sonic series has never done well with humor, so
Forces» relative lack of snark and «clever» fourth - wall breaking feels
like a blessing.
Sonic Forces is nowhere near as demanding or intricate as a game
like Bayonetta, but it has that hyperactive «throw everything at the wall» mentality Platinum games have.
Did you

Unlike some lesser games in the franchise, there's nothing cynical about
Sonic Forces — I felt
like Sonic Team was doing their best to entertain me every minute I was playing.
Sonic Forces is most definitely shaping up to be one heck of a
Sonic title, the
likes of which we have never seen before, but come this Holiday season, see it we will!

Something for those hardcore retro gamers who want that classic experience, we can get them excited with Mania, while also delivering
Sonic Forces to a broader audience who
like that high - speed action.

Press the attack button and Roy will ponderously swing his chosen weapon, while the parry button is far too unresponsive,
forcing you to rely more on the dodge mechanic and roll around
like a retarded version of
Sonic the Hedgehog.
- Iizuka has received a ton of requests from fans to have their own original characters appear in
Sonic games - while that couldn't happen,
Sonic Forces» custom character recognizes that fan desire - the avatar was created with the idea of «making straight high - speed action» - this time the concept is that all three styles (Modern, Classic, Avatar) would be high - speed based - make selections for the face, mouth, body color, and gender of custom characters - each species will also have their own unique skills, such as wolves being able to pull nearby rings - you can't change custom characters in the middle of the game - there is some sort of feature that's unlocked after you've cleared the game once related to this - the new avatar style will have a speedy and rhythmic style
like Modern
Sonic, but also different vectors from
Sonic - this includes differences in timing for pressing buttons, or the Wisps giving the avatar trickier movements - the story aims to depict heroes that would feel
like Sonic - by controlling different characters, the devs hope to show a story that extends to explaining the world setting as well - the story concept has been «Hero Army vs. Eggman's Army» from the start - when wondering who should be made playable among the heroes, the idea came up for Classic
Sonic - the character setting for the avatar is a civilian in an area occupied by Eggman who stands up and fights together with
Sonic - during stages, you'll hear radio contact from partners
like Tails and Amy -
Sonic and the rest of the gang form a resistance to stand against Eggman's army, so they relay information from headquarters - boss characters
like Chaos and Metal
Sonic will appear in Eggman's army - details on the new character (Infinite) are being kept secret - the main part of the storyline is that Eggman gathers strong enemies in the past to form an all mighty army - some people might be wondering why Shadow is on the enemy's side, but they can find out more by experiencing the story - the team thinks Japanese fans are taking a
liking to the serious story and character customization features - there were some struggles with the new engine in early stages, but now they've moved to a smooth development process - the team knew they wanted to bring the game to Nintendo's new console before they even knew it was the Switch - the Switch info came to them during the middle of the game's development - SEGA knew Nintendo fans would want to play
Sonic's new game, which is why they personally worked to bring it to Switch - SEGA plans to show the game in Japan at Tokyo Game Show 2017 in September - the team is also working on providing new information, including news that would be unique to Japan
Forces continues the trend of Modern
Sonic games being very average and not even an injection boost
like Classic
Sonic or the new customisable Avatar character can save this from being average at best.

Sonic series, drawing ideas from the
likes of Generations and Colors.
It seems
like the
Sonic Team's most recent project,
Sonic Forces, sold the most amount of units on the Nintendo Switch, compared to the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One.

Visually
Sonic Forces is a decent looking game with sharp and vibrant areas that have good attention to detail, but unfortunately, much
like the gameplay, this isn't consistent across the board.
It's disappointing that the overall level design in
Sonic Forces is sadly let down by these third person sections and with each one only lasting a few minutes at a time they never get a chance to gain full momentum and feel
like they are over before they've had chance to really get going.
Sonic Forces is not,
like several entries in the series, offensively bad.
What we
liked about
Sonic Forces isn't enough to save it, but it does ensure the whole shebang isn't completely wasted.
Maybe I'd
like Sonic CD more if it would let me move forward rather than
force me to experiment with its non-linear time - traveling mechanics.
Sonic 2 is way too long, and
Sonic 3, when paired with
Sonic & Knuckles, feels
like some sort of neverending
Sonic buffet hell that Sega's
forcing down your throat.
But, if you're
like me and don't enjoy them to the same extent as you did the classic ones, or even
Sonic Adventure, then
Sonic Forces is a decidedly average game; neither bad, nor particularly good either.
Much
like Sonic Unleashed and
Sonic Generations, Modern
Sonic's gameplay in
Sonic Forces mainly revolves around the boost mechanic.
My biggest complaint about
Sonic Forces is that it feels too much
like Sonic Generations, which isn't really a bad thing, but it feels
like no improvement to the movement was made since that title.
If they really ARE making
Sonic 1 - Mania be a different continuity from the one starting with
Sonic Adventure, then we could have three continuties and a chance for more Classic
Sonic specific games
like Mania and more Modern

I don't know that I've convinced myself there's a reason to pick up
Sonic Forces again, but I've appreciated the folks who reached out, despite my sarcasm, and explained why they
liked it.
