The closing of the Central American Seaway intensified the Gulf Stream, the upper limb of a conveyor -
like global ocean circulation called the Ocean Conveyor.
An introduction to studies
like the Global Ocean Circulation Experiment (GOCE, HOTS, BATS, etc.) can be found at http://hahana.soest.hawaii.edu/hot/intro.html.

In applying them, they found that a more realistic representation of the marine ecosystem helped the
ocean to take up and store carbon at similar rates regardless of
global changes in physical properties,
like temperature, salinity and
circulation.
We work with
global ocean circulation models to understand issues
like the thermal expansion of
ocean waters due to
global warming or the effect of changing
ocean currents on regional sea levels.
Many factors —
like the thermohaline
circulation, which reverses direction at the poles as warm salty water releases heat into the air and sinks down to the bottom — are heavily influenced by the
ocean's salinity, and thus, the movement of freshwater into and around the Arctic plays an important role in shaping both regional and
global climate.
That is because there are factors,
like air and
ocean circulation patterns, that affect both the rate and the intensity of the
global warming.
Personally I'd
like the climate boffins, or someone, run the
global circulation models with no
ocean and see what happens.
