What I
like about an above - the -
knee fitted dress with lace long
sleeves though, is it's smart and not too overly dressy statement.
Now, for the past six years, I have had seven dresses that I always wear for formal events (black - tie, weddings): (1) a long
sleeved, high - necked,
knee length black lace dress by Lover, whose darts I removed entirely so that it falls straight from my shoulders to hips to
knees in a very loose, comfortable cut (no need to pull any waists in, and I can eat as much as I
like) that I made an underskirt for, so it can also be calf length (2) an ivory version of the same above, with the optional lace underskirt (3) an amazingly intricate ivory leather macrame flapper dress uner which I wear a dark brown long, stretch singlet dress (so comfortable again)(4) a vermillion small V - neck, long bell
sleeved, straight cut, long, widens - at - the -(just above ankle) hemline dress I sewed in the most gorgeous lace for twenty dollars (5) a burgundy lace version of the vermillion lace dress in (4)-- for the same price (6) a
knee length, Romance Was Born silk shift three sizes up so it sits away from the waist — again — its all about «a'll the better to eat dinner with, my dear», in a huge, wild sunflower graphic print before graphic prints were trendy: it's giant sunflowers against an intense turquoise background (7) a calf length caftan cut dress that I made from Japanese printed silk my mother had bought and kept for sixty years (it's just a giant square with a hole fro my neck and two for my arms, and has the best drape EVER owing to its being silk)
Our cap
sleeved knee length slips feel
like silk and are perfect under sheer dresses.
We
like the shirt collar, we
like the
knee length of it, and, for reasons we're not entirely sure we can explain, we
like the solid colored banding at the bottom of the dress and the
sleeves.
A devout Muslim, Rania dresses accordingly, with long
sleeves and
knee - length or longer skirts,
like this one from Proenza Schouler.
Dress at least
knee length or below and if you must wear a top with no
sleeves, wear a jacket
like I did.

I especially love over the
knee boots with A-line and sweater dresses (
like this fun tie
sleeve sweater dress that I'm wearing).
The coats have many similarities: slightly flared straight shapes (
like A-line) with just two fasteners in the front,
knee length, unlined «double face» wool,
sleeves a bit too long.
I did A LOT to this dress, I dyed it to cream so the whole dress would be the same color, I raised the waist line so it wouldn't be
like a v - shape waist - line, cut off all the tulle, cut the length of the dress to right below the
knee - length, took off the lace collar, lace - bib, cut off the lace cuffs and cut off the
sleeves and made it smaller and shorter length, took in an inch from each side of the dress, cut off the train and the giant bow in the back and gathered the extra lace from the sides to add to the back.
Unless it is very hot I tend to
like sleeves and they must cover my
knees (not my best feature)
I
like them with long
sleeves and a
knee - length skirt, to balance out the fitted shape.
