I have also read that people who try really hard to keep their stuff protected (
like money belts) and special cases, are targeted more.
Personally, I don't
like money belts.
I did use one during my backpacking years although I wore mine under my clothing
like a money belt for security.

money belt in that when you wear it, it looks just
like a regular
belt.

money belt has a breathable mesh rear that makes it comfortable to wear even for hours.
Anti-theft products that are worn under your clothing (such as a bra stash or
money belt) are particularly useful to conceal valuables in places
like Spain or Nicaragua.
If the items are small,
like cash, credit cards, and your passport, then they belong hidden and safe in a
money belt.
When a
money belt is visible — either by jutting out from your body or seen through your clothing, for example — that's
like waving the starting flag to thieves.
If you really need to access what's in the
money belt, go to a place where you can do that unobtrusively —
like a restroom.
