If the Bible is outdated, then many Christians will cease to
turn the
other cheek to people
like you, and we would not give lying, cheating, etc a second thought before we do these things.
I feel
like a lightweight in the heavyweight division; this statement is not driven by a need to appear humble or to «earn points» with God or those longsuffering Christians still reading this thread by
turning the
other cheek and being meek.
Jesus did have an incredibly clear cut position on violence, one that Christians typically ignore (
like most of his teachings): «
Turn the
other cheek.»
Of course I also agree with ex-NY Mayor Koch who stated something
like, I don't believe in
turning the
other cheek, I give back as much as I get.
My take is that those who call themselves Christians really ought to pay attention to what Christ said: «treat
others as you would
like to be treated,» «do good to those who persecute you,» «love one another,» «be as wise as serpents and as harmless as doves,» «help the poor,» «
turn the
other cheek.»
Christ said «do good to those who persecute you,» «treat
others as you would
like to be treated,» «
turn the
other cheek,» and «love one another.»
This is
like what has been said about
turning the
other cheek; in fact it simply carries the same theme a little further.
Do you think that Jesus saying things
like «Love you enemy» and «
turn the
other cheek» don't give us a picture of Jesus?
Hopefully some day we can learn to just look the
other way (You know,
turn the
other cheek as Christ taught), or learn that saying
other people's beliefs are stupid (atheist's you don't
like it when people tell you you're wrong, but you feel you can tell
others they're wrong) is detrimental to a civilized society.
Or maybe, you know, he was taking His own Son's advice and
like,
turning the
other cheek and stuff.
At the center of this final battle between good and evil is an action - hero -
like Jesus, who is in no mood to
turn the
other cheek.
And these big pooers - that - be - if they were truly Christian they would
turn the
other cheek and certainly handle the situation much more Christ -
like.
And the question for His followers today is what it looks
like to do good (Luke 6:27), bless (Luke 6:28), pray (Luke 6:28),
turn the
other cheek (Luke 6:29), offer your shirt (Luke 6:29), give to those who ask (Luke 6:30), and let people walk away with your stuff (Luke 6:30).
I am not saying that Caesar is acting out of anything
like Christian motives; but I wonder whether he does not actually come off better than we do in remaining silent before our slanders, in
turning the
other cheek, in forgiving our defiance of his law.
