Second, I thought it would be better for the reader to come to conclusions about
the likely effect of these events.

In his paper «Mega-
Events: The
effect of the world's biggest sporting
events on local, regional, and national economies,» he writes: «A local resident who goes to an All - Star Game when it is in town is spending money at the game that
likely would have been spent locally elsewhere in the absence
of the game.
While it remains to be seen what the full
effects of these two recent
events will be, over time they are
likely to prove to be healthy adjustments.
Though it has proved impossible to pin down any single unifying cause for this undercurrent
of societal disquiet, there is a strong implication that in the absence
of concrete policy proposals to mitigate the riots» causes and
effects similar
events are
likely to take place again — possibly even in the near future.
People who recently experienced severe weather
events such as floods, storms and drought are more
likely to support policies to adapt to the
effects of climate change, according to a new study co-authored by an Indiana University researcher.
Over a populated area with flimsy structures, that could be deadly, but in the more
likely event of an explosion over the ocean, the
effects would be relatively minor.
Central Appalachian forests have been experiencing the
effects of a changing climate for decades, and
effects such as more heavy rainfall
events, more drought, and more hot days are
likely to continue, according to a new vulnerability assessment for the region by the U.S. Forest Service and many partners.
«As the seas warm because
of our
effect on the climate, bleaching
events in the Great Barrier Reef and other areas within the Coral Sea are
likely to become more frequent and more devastating,» the team
of Australian university scientists wrote Thursday in The Conversation, announcing the results
of the analysis.
Most are based on Thorndike's law
of effect which states that behaviors just prior to a pleasant
event are more
likely to be repeated; behaviors just prior to unpleasant
events are more
likely to diminish.
If you go into the jam thinking you want to learn something, like how to add sound
effects to a game, you are much more
likely to be pleased at the end
of the
event.
The so - called 100 - year flood is
likely to become more frequent.4 Because transportation planners use such
events to determine infrastructure needs, future plans based on the past are
likely to become less reliable — and planners will need to develop models that reflect the
effects of climate change.7
Some
of the
effects of climate change are
likely to include more variable weather, heat waves, heavy precipitation
events, flooding, droughts, more intense storms such as hurricanes, sea level rise, and air pollution.
For the majority
of these metrics and during the current decade, the combined
effect of anthropogenic and natural forcing is estimated to have made extreme fire risk
events in the region 1.5 to 6 times as
likely compared to a climate that would have been with natural forcings alone.
I consider it as very
likely that the 20 year trends will still be statistically significant also in three, five or ten years from now, unless there is some strong volcanic explosion that blows a lot
of reflecting aerosols in the stratosphere causing a temporary temperature dip, or some other cause the
effect of which is explainable within the framework
of current knowledge about the climate system, but as
event not really predictable.
The secondary
effects of all
of the above are very
likely to bring on the biggest Earth quakes and largest volcanic eruptions observed for 200 years, the trends
of these
events have been rising since the early 1990s.
Second, a series
of mildly explosive volcanoes, which increased stratospheric particles,
likely had more
of a cooling
effect than previously recognized.35, 36,37 Third, the high incidence
of La Niña
events in the last 15 years has played a role in the observed trends.29, 38 Recent analyses13 suggest that more
of the increase in heat energy during this period has been transferred to the deep ocean than previously.
Also, if a Carrington
event is
likely, wouldn't it make more sense to fund the engineering to mitigate the
effect on mechanical systems instead
of more studies about the potential problem?
A physicist is no more
likely than a sociologist to know what human emissions will be 50 years from now — if a slight warming would be beneficial or harmful to humans or the natural world; if forcings and feedbacks will partly or completely offset the theoretical warming; if natural variability will exceed any discernible human
effect; if secondary
effects on weather will lead to more extreme or more mild weather
events; if efforts to reduce emissions will be successful; who should reduce emissions, by what amounts, or when; and whether the costs
of attempting to reduce emissions will exceed the benefits by an amount so large as to render the effort counterproductive.
All three methods agreed that the
effect of climate change was positive, making precipitation
events like this about 40 % more
likely, with a provisional 2.5 - 97.5 % confidence interval
of 5 - 80 %.
The combined
effect of these two dynamics is
likely to exacerbate the «levee
effect» by reducing the frequency
of moderate
events and exposing the society to few catastrophic floods, followed by potentially long and painful post-event recovery.
The most
likely candidate for that climatic variable force that comes to mind is solar variability (because I can think
of no other force that can change or reverse in a different trend often enough, and quick enough to account for the historical climatic record) and the primary and secondary
effects associated with this solar variability which I feel are a significant player in glacial / inter-glacial cycles, counter climatic trends when taken into consideration with these factors which are, land / ocean arrangements, mean land elevation, mean magnetic field strength
of the earth (magnetic excursions), the mean state
of the climate (average global temperature), the initial state
of the earth's climate (how close to interglacial - glacial threshold condition it is) the state
of random terrestrial (violent volcanic eruption, or a random atmospheric circulation / oceanic pattern that feeds upon itself possibly) / extra terrestrial
events (super-nova in vicinity
of earth or a random impact) along with Milankovitch Cycles.
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)'s technical paper on the subject says that the negative
effects of slow onset
events are already affecting developing countries and the resulting loss and damage associated with slow onset
events is
likely to increase significantly, even assuming that appropriate mitigation and adaptation action is undertaken.
Thus, the gradual northward and upward movement
of the species» range since 1904 is
likely due to the
effects of a few extreme weather
events on population extinction rates.»
Lawyers quite reasonably prefer to have control over the course
of a legal proceeding, but if they cede the bulk
of that control to an amateur — specifically, you — with little or no litigation experience, the fear is that you might blame them in the
event that you lose your court case, in
effect, holding them responsible for errors
of incompetence that were
likely due to your own handling
of the matter.
Life and family
events premigration and postmigration have been found to have a profound
effect on the health and well - being
of immigrant children.1, 2 Risk factors include trauma, separation from parents, nonvoluntary migration, obstacles in the acculturation process, 3 and children who immigrate in their mid - or late teens.1, 4 Research also shows that parents who have experienced or witnessed violence have poorer mental health, 2,5 which is
likely to affect parent — child attachment and negatively impact child development and mental health.5 Transitioning to a new country may be beneficial for both parents and children, but it may render new and unexpected constraints in the parent — child relationship (eg, children tend to acculturate to the new country faster than their parents), cause disharmony and power conflicts, 6 — 8 and, subsequently, affect the child's mental health.9
As I argued in these columns some days ago, the even better question may be: What can we do to stop the state and national impact
of these floods and other climatic catastrophes being used as an excuse to decrease public community health, Aboriginal health and mental health service spending, just when demand for them is
likely to grow exponentially and plateau at a new peak, because
of the irretrievable losses, long - lasting «slow - burn disaster» and wearing - down
effects of these
events?
FAMILY LAW — CHILDREN — Best interests — Where both parents seek sole parental responsibility and for the child to live with them — Where the respondent mother believes the child would settle down and accept the arrangement if the court ordered for the child to spend no time with applicant father — Where the court has a statutory mandate to make parenting orders with the child's best interests as the paramount concern — Where there is little doubt that the child would benefit from having a meaningful relationship with both parents — Where the child's clear views that he does not want to spend time with the respondent mother should be given significant weight in the circumstances — Where the child is
of an age, maturity and intelligence to have principally formed his own rationally based views — Where the court is satisfied that it is in the child's best interests for the presumption
of equal shared parental responsibility to be rebutted — Where the respondent father is to have sole parental responsibility and the child is to live with him — Where the applicant mother is permitted to attend certain school and sporting
events of the child — Where the child should be able to instigate contact with the respondent mother as he considers appropriate to his needs and circumstances — Where the orders made are least
likely to lead to the institution
of further proceedings in relation to the child — Where the child is to have the outcome
of these proceedings, the
effect of the orders and the reasons for judgment explained to him by an expert as soon as reasonably practical.
However, and in contrast to studies on
effects of negative life
events during adulthood we here studied long - term
effects of enduring childhood family settings which are possibly more
likely to lead to long - term changes to the set - point
of general life - satisfaction during adulthood.
