Current rules do not let people fly
drones beyond the line
of sight
of human operators and over people's heads in public places, which
limits companies like Amazon (amzn) and Google (goog) from
using drones to deliver goods, among other business
uses, beyond testing.
Furthermore, the conventional cameras mounted on
drones work only when there is a high amount
of light available, and the
drone's speed has to be
limited otherwise the resulting image is motion - blurred and can not be
used by computer vision algorithms.
Researchers believe this technology — published online today in Bioinspiration & Biomimetics — could be
used in aerial or submarine
drones to improve navigation, as well as extend the sensory range
of current robotic systems, which is
limited to vision, radar, and sonar.
