Even though I've added only a relatively small amount
of line work to maintain the loose atmosphere, if you compare the «before and after»
pictures, the pen
work adds a lot more punch.
The
works, created at different scales and on different supports, each contain a single
line placed squarely at the center
of the
picture field and rendered in a restricted palette
of black.
Time then becomes an implicit part
of the
work as one traces the progression
of the
line across the
picture plane and imagines the artist's repeated gesture.
The window hovers toward the outer border
of the
picture with a curved edge at the lower corner — a
line that replicated his pendulum shaped
works from the mid-70s.
The echoes
of Matisse in her
work have not gone unnoticed; Dancy's infectious
lines, patterns, and free - flowing forms that often exist outside
of the
picture frame, convey a certain joie de vivre.
The first Berkeley
pictures, such as Berkeley # 4 (1953) are, like the previous
works done while still in Albuquerque, cut by horizontal
lines or bands
of color suggesting a sliver
of sky above a hilly landscape.
But the over-complicated
line on the flattened
picture plane
worked against them, reducing them to an illustrative mode
of Cubism.
Pollock uses techniques similar to many signature characteristics
of El Greco's
work, such as the horizontal division
of the
picture plane, the oval flow
of the composition, and the repeated use
of jagged, angular
lines and triangular forms.
During the 1980s, Riley's
work took another turn when she introduced the diagonal
line in her paintings, shattering the
picture plane into multiple lozenges and intensifying the sensation
of rhythm and movement.
Adding to the richness
of the
work is the fact that Graham has exhibited paintings like the one
pictured here, further blurring
lines between invented and «real» personae.
Just as her early
work played abstraction and figuration off one another, in her diagram
works the classic antinomies
of picture making — color and
line, figure and ground, painting and drawing — rub up against one another, with neither ever being able to dominate the other.
The flattened, frieze - like perspective
of these
works creates dizzying scenes
of simultaneous action, and his strong vertical
lines and recessed figures create a spatial understanding that invite the viewer into the
picture plane.
He was already playing with the medium's relation to painting, with the
line between abstraction and figuration, with an abolition
of traditional perspective, with the theme
of global commercialism, with
picture sizes so large that viewers» experience
of the
work changed noticeably at different distances.
Among the show's other notable
works is George Condo's Homage to Manet, 1985, an oil painting that references the
work of the great impressionist painter, and which stands in stark contrast to Andy Warhol's exploration
of colour and blurring
of commercial and fine - art
lines in Reflected (Purple, Red, Green and Yellow on Black), 1982 (fourth
picture).
Here, around one hundred
works of art invite the visitor to find out more about the special focus areas
of the Daimler Art Collection: the constructivist and concrete tendencies evident in the
pictures of Josef Albers, Anton Stankowski and Camille Graeser, the interaction
of line, surface and space in
works by Georges Vantongerloo, Norbert Kricke and Ben Willikens,
pictures and decorative objects
of the zero avant - garde
of around 1960, classics
of the Minimal Art movement by Charlotte Posenenske or Franz Erhard Walter from around 1970, and recent photographic and video
works by artists from India, South Africa and the US.
Concurrent with our show, SF MoMA have mounted an exhibition that brackets Fusco's RFK Funeral Train photographs with video
work by Philippe Parreno re-creating the experience
of the train and an archival project by Rein Terpstra which tracked down
pictures of the train taken by the people who
lined the rails.
