But it also guides the process with explicit standards and
expectations for
teacher performance, and it supports
teachers with professional development
linked to the standards.
In Kelly School, which is discussed in the book, these characteristics were built through a set of interrelated organizational routines including close monitoring of each student's academic progress, an explicit
link between students» outcomes and
teachers» practices, weekly 90 - minute professional development meetings focused on instructional improvement, and the cultivation of a formal and informal discourse emphasizing high
expectations, cultural responsiveness, and
teachers» responsibility for student learning.
Research also shows that
teachers hold differing and lower
expectations for students of color and low - income students, as compared with more affluent students, which is a key
link to our educational achievement gap.
Implicit in these studies were two considerations that affect the content of preparation programs: the
expectation that preparation programs build from the knowledge and skills of participants when they enter, and whether or not the program was
linked to an explicit set of anticipated
teacher leader practices.
The test question
links make it easy for
teachers to see how the student
expectations have been tested over multiple years, which deepens their understanding of how students are expected to demonstrate their learning.
To our knowledge, however, no other studies have examined the
link between
teacher expectations and future educational attainment using both the ELS data collected in 2002 and a new wave of data released in February 2014.
But as new standardized tests and
teacher evaluations were
linked to the standards, and as another presidential election looms, the Common Core has become more than just a set of basic
expectations for knowledge and skills students should have when they graduate from high school.
The second culturally responsive strategy in the pyramid model framework is developing and teaching two to five classroom
expectations that are
linked to the values and cultures of the children,
teachers, and families.
The idea came from former classroom
teacher Rafe Esquith (video
linked in the PowerPoint) as a way of creating a strong classroom culture and fostering a language to effectively communicate
expectations.
