This has prompted the FWC to create initiatives and opportunities for divers, anglers and commercial harvesters to remove
lionfish as part of seasonal competitions and year - round events.
And one researcher at Nova Southeastern University (NSU) continues working to learn as much about
lionfish as he can.

Once the venomous spines are cooked or removed, they become a non-issue, and it turns out
lionfish are
as tasty
as any other white fish.
Even Whole Foods has gotten onboard; in 2016 the upscale grocer added
lionfish to the shelves and started promoting it
as «an invasive species» in the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea, «far from its native waters.»
«It's a never - ending battle

Governments, industry and conservation groups across this region are already trying to cull
lionfish from their waters, and encourage their use

as ciguatoxin mimics.
As of July 2014, though, there are no known cases of ciguatera from eating

It was given the name Wunderpus photogenicus because the photographer and scientists found that the species could mimic most of its predators, including
lionfish and mantis shrimps,
as a means of defense.
Lionfish were first detected in Florida waters during the 1980s and were recognized
as an established invasive species in the 2000s, according to Amanda Nalley, a public information specialist with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).
They also wanted to evaluate scientifically whether,
as some speculate, that overfishing of reef predators had allowed the
lionfish population to grow unchecked.
The researchers support restoration of large - reef predators
as a way to achieve better balance and biodiversity, but they are not optimistic that this would affect the burgeoning
lionfish population.

A host of other notable performers include several species of sharks (whale, bamboo, wobbegong and white tips), humpback whales, turtles, dolphins, seahorses, octopus,

as a dazzling coral garden.
Turtles, barracudas and reef sharks call the reefs their home

These places offer views of the leopard shark, a beautiful but not dangerous shark,

Teeming with marine life, the wrecks are home to more than 175 species of reef fish such
as yellowtail, kingfish and
lionfish,
as well
as moray eels, turtles, dolphins, stingrays and harmless wobbegong sharks, all totally unmoved by human presence.

Fish present particular challenges, with the Great Lakes girding for the arrival of Asian carp and

Until we can develop a better understanding of this invasion, one of the few control mechanisms may be to develop a market for them
as a food fish...
lionfish are pretty easy to catch, taste good and could be advertised
as a conservation dish.
Since then, the
lionfish has spread up the coast
as far
as North Carolina and throughout the Bahamas and Caribbean islands.
