The truth is there is too much competition, and unless your publisher is doing brilliant content marketing, building a genre specific email list, helping you build your amazing author website and boosting your optin offer, counseling you on social media strategy and long term book sales, you've basically signed away a big chunk of your sales in exchange for editing, formatting and design.

The Kindlepreneur did an amazing job of collecting and listing 127 book promotion websites with pricing, requirements and other notes.

Am nowhere near your numbers, but I did run a free book listing for my nonfiction memoir CONTACT a few months ago with Bookbub and got about 12,000 downloads which I thought was pretty amazing as not everyone wants to read a memoir of a soldier and combat etc...... I have run it free a few times before on the FREE TO LIST sites you mention and never did more than about 3000 downloads each time so that definitely proves the value of Bookbub in terms of sheer numbers.

This amazing book finds forth rank in my list of the 10 must read books for stock market investors.
