Lithotripsy is a medical procedure that uses sound waves or shock waves to break up kidney stones into smaller pieces, making it easier for the body to pass them naturally.
Full definition
Some of the special procedures that can be performed include dialysis for acute kidney injury,
laser lithotripsy for bladder stones, laparascopic liver biopsy, collagen injections for urinary incontinence, coil placement for liver shunts, gastrointestinal endoscopy, dietary consultation and obesity management, bronchoscopy and pulmonary function testing, rhinoscopy, and interventional procedures such as stent placement for collapsing trachea or nasopharygeal stenosis.
Shock
wave lithotripsy, which uses sound waves to break stones into smaller pieces that you then excrete in your pee, can be used to remove that obstruction in some cases.
If you are interested in this procedure as an alternative to surgery, notify your veterinarian to find out if there is a facility near you that is equipped
for lithotripsy.
If a stone is too large to pass on its own or is causing other problems, you may need to have it removed
with lithotripsy or kidney stone surgery.

The conventional approach to removal of stones usually involves shattering the stone using ESWL (Extracorporeal
Shockwave Lithotripsy)-- but this often leaves residual fragments which often require the treatment to be repeated.
The facility local to us recommends
against lithotripsy if there are more than 5 stones present.
A second, and more widely practiced form
of lithotripsy uses a laser to destroy the stones.
«Lith» means «stone» and «tripsis» means «crushing» so, in short,

lithotripsy devices, stone retrieval devices, sheaths, balloons and catheters.
Because lithotripsy can wash an infection backward and up into the kidneys, culture of the urine should be performed prior to the procedure.
Lithotripsy treatments provide an attractive option for those patients with recurring stones so they will not have to undergo repeated invasive surgeries.
Purdue University and the University of Minnesota pioneered the laser
lithotripsy technique in veterinary medicine and have been using it successfully for the past several years.

Calcium oxalate crystals and stones, on the other hand, do not often form if the urine pH is greater than 6.25 and SG is less than 1.030 and they do not dissolve and always have to be removed by surgery or in some cases,
by lithotripsy.
Example 1: Mr. Verma was diagnosed with kidney stones and a specialist
advised lithotripsy for the stones» removal.
Laser lithotripsy requires the cystoscope laser to be in contact with the stone so, again, the cat must be female; the male cat's urethra is too small for a cystoscope.
«Lith» means stone and «tripsis» means crushing so, in short,

Approximately 10 % of cases
where lithotripsy was used to fragment a kidney stone ended up with a stone fragment obstructing a ureter.

Extracorporeal lithotripsy is available at both the Animal Medical Center (AMC) in New York, Purdue University Veterinary School and the University of Tennessee.
ESWL (

If numerous stones are present,
lithotripsy is not efficient and surgery should be performed instead.
This requires some additional treatment (either
another lithotripsy, surgery, medical management etc..)
There are two types of
lithotripsy: intracorporeal laser lithotripsy and extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy.
This option (called «laser
lithotripsy») is especially useful when the number of stones present is small and / or when a stone is lodged in the urethra and can not be flushed into the bladder.
«

This option, called laser

For larger stones, laser
lithotripsy can be used to break the stone into smaller pieces that can be removed or passed.
The procedure is called
a lithotripsy.
Studies have shown that 100 percent of stones in the urethra can be removed with intracorporeal laser
lithotripsy and the median time to complete the procedure was only 36 minutes.
If the stone is too large to pass through the urethra, it can be broken apart using laser
lithotripsy.
These include a technique called laser
lithotripsy that breaks down stones into smaller pieces that can then be voided out, and a procedure called voiding urohydropropulsion, which is a technique that involves manually expressing stones out through the urethra while the patient is sedated.
Although the best candidates for
lithotripsy are dogs, the procedure can also be used for female cats.
Advanced techniques available at Purdue include laser and extracorporeal shock wave
lithotripsy, intermittent hemodialysis for managing AKI and intoxications, molecular diagnosis of infectious disease, and minimally invasive interventional urology.
