The Defender has been tweaked over the years with various new engines - it's about to receive its seventh different

There'll be four engines at launch — 64bhp naturally aspirated and 84bhp turbocharged
versions of the 875cc two - cylinder TwinAir petrol engine shared with the Fiat 500 and Alfa Romeo Mito, plus the familiar 68bhp 1.2 -
litre four - cylinder petrol and 74bhp 1.3 -
litre Multijet four - cylinder
diesel from the outgoing Panda.
The
versions which gain the option are the 181bhp Cooper S petrol, 141bhp Cooper SD
diesel and the range topping John Cooper Works, which in the ALL4 four - wheel - drive Countryman and Paceman, gets a 215bhp 1.6 -
litre turbo engine which aids a 140mph top speed and sub - 7.0 sec 0 - 60 time.
Another

version of the V8 aboard the seriously expensive (and four - wheel - drive only) Turbo.
The engine range is made up of 2.2 -
litre diesels with either 148 or 178bhp, two 2.0 -
litre turbocharged petrols with either 197bhp or 276bhp, and a range - topping twin - turbo V6 Quadrifoglio
version with 503bhp.

litre diesel that currently powers entry - level Rangers.
It is believed that the same engine range will be adopted by the Family Tourer, including the 1.5 -
litre 3 - cylinder turbocharged petrol and
diesel units and the range - topping 2.0 -
litre 231 hp and 350 Nm engine powering the 225i
version.
The 1.6 -
litre TDI is marginally the smoothest of the Octavia's
diesel line - up, but while its 74.2 mpg fuel economy (80.7 mpg for the GreenLine III
version) is very impressive, many drivers will hanker for a quicker 0 - 62mph time than the 10.6 seconds it can manage.
While the Peugeot - sourced 1.6 T engine will remain in the short term (after which it will be replaced by a three - cylinder
version of the Drive - E engine), all the bigger engines will be replaced by some

litre petrol 2008, and also in the 74bhp and 99bhp
diesels.
If it does so, we will get two
diesel variants including a 1.4 -
litre, 89 BHP trim and a 1.6 -
litre, 126 BHP
version.
Somewhere prior to that Land Rover had quietly dropped the V6 petrol engine (in the UK, at least), so adding a more powerful
version of the 2.2
litre diesel made sense as did providing a lower price entry point in the FWD Freelander.
In addition, two
versions of the 1.6 -
litre CRDi
diesel engine will be available, with 115PS and 136PS (113bhp and 134bhp), and CO2 emissions expected to fall below 110g / km.
Performance for the estate models is just a couple of tenths slower than the lighter five - door
versions, so the 2.0 -
litre petrol knocks off 0 - 60mph in 5.7 seconds, while the 2.0 -
litre diesel does it in 7.1 seconds.
The
diesel is offered in two guises - a 2 -
litre, 150PS front - wheel - drive
version and a more powerful 2.0 -
litre, 184PS
version one with Audi's famed quattro four - wheel - drive system.
The 2009 Sorento saw the arrival of the R - Engine family of turbo

In global markets, the 2016 Range Rover Evoque gets a new 2.0 -

diesel engine but the Indian
version continues to be powered by the same 2.2 -
litre oil - burner that is known to belt out 190 PS of power and 420 Nm of torque.
The pre-facelift
version of the Focus (2010 — 2014) came with a 1.6 -
litre TDCi
diesel engine, but Ford replaced this for a 1.5 -
litre unit with the facelift, available with 94bhp or 118bhp outputs.
The
diesel version will get a 1.4 -
litre U2 CRDI engine that comes mated to a 6 - speed manual gearbox to generate 89bhp of power.
The 118bhp 1.5 -
litre TDCi
diesel is also a sub-100g / km car offering zero VED and generally very low costs, owing to 74.3 mpg combined cycle economy — and even the most powerful
diesel, the 182bhp
version in the ST, emits just 110g / km CO2 and returns 74.3 mpg.
That makes it as quick as the 110kW / 370Nm 2.0 -
litre turbo -
diesel version, which lowers fuel consumption to 4.5 L / 100 km with the aid of idle - stop tech.
The 2.5

diesel engine is offered in BS IV and BS III
versions and transmission duties are performed by a five - speed manual unit.
