This is due to a brief period before a puppy reaches 16 weeks where there is little protection left from the mother's antibodies and
little effective vaccine protection.

In fact, there has been
little research to determine how long most of the
vaccines we give our pets are
effective at preventing disease.
But when I have
little faith that a
vaccine is
effective or required or if I feel the risk of a non-core disease is quite low - I tell that to my clients as well and I let them make those decisions.
Vaccines should be given at least 3 weeks apart; there is
little published research suggesting an outside limit, but at least a 4 - 8 week interval is probably safe and
effective.
