films.Overall, it does
little but scratch the surface and a bit more in - depth analysis to his
films would have been welcome but to paraphrase Billy Bob Thornton on the outtakes at the end; «Rick Linklater doesn't need anyone to make a documentary about him.
There's enough talent on display, from a promising filmmaker to a breakout cast, to make
Little Accidents a modest watch, but its paper - thin characters, awkward romantic subplot, and predictable conclusion reduce the overall effectiveness of the
film — a shame, because it's the type of small
independent film you want to root for.
Writer - director Sara Colangelo expands her 2010 short
film Little Accidents into her first full - length feature, which recently received an
Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best First Screenplay.

The difficult
little brother of the
independent cinema world is coming off a mostly unsuccessful attempt to return to former glories with 2009's «Happiness» semi-sequel «Life in Wartime,» and had promised lighter fare for his latest, «Dark Horse,» claiming that for the first time in his career that he wanted to make a
film without pedophilia, or masturbation, or any of the taboo - breaking subjects that he made his name with.
It's a smarter, less - angry version of Transamerica while featuring the same number of depressed gay people and Harold & Maude-esque teenage boys; it's got the Wes Anderson stamp of approval for its coterie of sage oddballs, deadpan surrogates, and family decompositions; it has a stellar cast doing extremely predictable work at a stellar level; and it comes with the Sundance stamp of approval predestined for it because
Little Miss Sunshine is a summary of every
independent film since «dysfunction» became a hot - key button on critics» keyboards.
Big budget studio
films are a blast, but we're in a day and age where you can actually insure the influx of those
little independent gems.
The marketing genius who created the DVD box for this
little independent, straight to DVD
film had two things in mind.

film in the making like What We Do in the Shadows, or a true sleeper like Straight Outta Compton (or Spy, for that matter), or a blockbuster hitting the sweet spot for audiences and critics alike like Mad Max has done, or a traditional standalone nonfranchise blockbuster like The Martian, or an animated
film with the acclaim of Inside Out, or a
little horror movie that could like It Follows, or an unexpected
independent drama that ran forever like Room....2015 was a year like 1999 or 1994.
Box - office prognosticators can predict a
film's final grosses almost immediately, and there's very
little chance for word - of - mouth to help build up hype, except in the cases of certain smaller
independent works.

Combining warmth and genuine pain without resorting to a sappy or contrived ending is no longer anything new in the
independent film scene but it is always welcome to see it done as well as it is done in
Little Miss Sunshine.
In a crowded sea of male - dominated Hollywood
films and paper - thin female characters,
little independent gems like «Landline» generate even more of an electrifying spark.
Huffman's performance being the sort of stunt in a minor
independent film that plays fast and loose with smug liberal paternalism should guarantee her an Oscar nomination — and it can't hurt that another Leonardo DiCaprio doppelgänger arrives post-Michael Pitt in the form of Kevin Zegers, trailing a
little pathos and a
little inappropriate titillation on his thin shoulders.
That said, I applaud the Spirits for rewarding such a terse, difficult
little film — I think it's works like this, rather than the «Junos» and «Sunshines» of
independent cinema, that the awards are really designed to benefit.
