Applying for a
part -
time job is a
little different from applying for a full -
time professional position.
Sometimes I get recent graduates with very
little to put on their resumes, no
part time jobs, no extracurriculars.
Otherwise, the second most common mistake a student makes is that they spend too much
time explaining duties in
part time jobs that have
little to do with their
job target.
It might mean picking up a
part -
time job doing something completely different, just for a
little extra cash and to get you out of the house.
This, in addition to how
little time employers spend reviewing each application, makes your resume the most important
part of your search for a
job.
But back to reality (I mean, America)... if you're out of work for an extended period of
time, do something... anything... during that
time to demonstrate a continued interest in your career: take on a very -
part -
time (5 or fewer hours per week) telecommuting
job; join a professional association relevant to your line of work and get involved; take an online class to bolster your skills; volunteer with an organization where you can do something that's a
little beyond your skill set.
So it pays to take
time to standardize the information in all of the materials that you'll be using as
part of your
job hunt, even if it takes a
little more
time and money to do this.
It always feels like there are fewer
jobs than there are applicants, and if you have mostly worked for your family or in
part -
time jobs, the prospect of an interview can be a
little terrifying.
It's a
