For this exhibition the pieces were chosen not only because of their life and vibrancy, but because of their small size; I feel that there is an immediate transaction that takes you into them and because they are small, the relationship of the paintings to the body is different — one has to get up close to see them, find the complexity, detail and subtlety that lies in wait for the patient observer.

With a focus on works from the period between their first meeting in 1955 until their separation in 1979, the exhibition shows how Mitchell and Riopelle, who lived together in Paris, then in Vétheuil in the Seine valley, developed unique but related bodies of work while they were engaging in a vigorous exchange about abstraction and painting.

Art history is littered with troubling instances of male artists objectifying women — from Andrew Wyeth only painting women he was «enamored» with and «smitten» by to Yves Klein using women's bodies as «living paintbrushes» for his Anthropometry series.

Experiments with the traditional notion of «painting» are best embodied in 6th Action: Vienna Walk (1965), in which he walked through the city of Vienna as a «living picture», fully painted in white, with a black line dividing his body in two halves.

Exhibitions during the anniversary celebration include Opener 29: Arturo Herrera (through August 23, 2015), featuring new works from the Berlin - based artist's recent body of abstract paintings for which he manipulated small books found at flea markets; Machine Project — The Platinum Collection (Live by Special Request), (September 19, 2015 — January 3, 2016), which will feature a series of interventions, performances, and happenings created for the Tang by Skidmore alumnus Mark Allen in collaboration with his Los Angeles - based collective Machine Project; Affinity Atlas (September 5, 2015 — January 3, 2016), inspired by the work of pioneering cultural theorist and art historian Aby Warburg, charts an exploratory path built upon idiosyncratic treasures and contemporary art culled from the Tang's and Skidmore's collections; and Alma Thomas: A Retrospective (February 6 — June 5, 2016), which will explore the work of this influential but sometimes overlooked artist in the first museum survey of her work since 2001.
