Last month (January 2011) a
study was published in Malaysia showing how Virgin Coconut
Oil helped prevent
liver damage.
This went along well with an earlier
study from Norway that showed that children who received cod -
liver oil as infants also had a reduced risk of developing type 1 diabetes.

In the current
study, we found that while a high fat diet containing Plenish also induced obesity, glucose intolerance and fatty

oil to what Americans are currently consuming caused mice to become obese, diabetic and insulin resistant and to have large lipid droplets and hepatocyte ballooning in their

My hope is that no matter the outcome of further research and
study about fermented cod
liver oil, the real food community will take this as a lesson in the importance of verifying the quality of supplements and use this as an opportunity to improve the real food movement, rather than to divide the community.

I note on pg.86 on Deep Nutrition you cite a
study which showed that cod
liver oil taken by pregnant mothers had protective and long lasting effects on the baby's intelligence.
The significance of detox becomes apparent when you understand that our main
liver detox gene, P450, has been crippling by the industrial seed oils ubiquitous in the food system thus hindering our ability to detox; recent
studies have found that soybean
oil, canola
oil (and vegetable oils as they typically contain soybean / canola

Second, I'm very aware of the
studies connected with synthetic vitamin A. Cod
liver oil is a food and contains naturally occurring vitamin A which hasn't been associated with any defects.
I think a
study should be done that compares the effects of using vitamin A and D in synthetic form VS. cod
liver oil... in the same ratios.

studies only look at the short - term benefits, and one on palm
oil (similar fat composition to coconut
oil) showed excess consumption contributed to fatty
liver while sunflower
oil didn't.

You know, that's why I'm a fan of things like using organ meats like
liver, or using like a cod
liver oil supplement, that's why I'm a fan of eating eggs with the yoke but it was really interesting
study and I think it just highlights that any high intake of any specific vitamin unopposed might be playing with fire.
