Notwithstanding, in the mean while they fight in spirit against the flesh, lest they should fulfill the lusts thereof; and although they feel the flesh to rage and rebel, and themselves also do fan sometimes into sin through infirmity, yet are they not discouraged, nor think therefore that their state and kind of life, and the works which are done according to their calling, displease God; but they raise up themselves by faith.»

The state and its agencies, including the public schools and colleges, can be true to the principle of religious liberty without giving up their primary obligation to promote the religious life, in the fundamental sense of reverent devotion.

Some think he intended to say just this; others seem to believe that St. Paul is working up towards his plainly stated conviction that sin in itself is death — shall we say, death as loss of God whose service is not only, as the collect tells us, «perfect freedom», but also true life as men are intended by God to live it.

Some speak in individual terms of the cultivation of the Christian life or the salvation of souls; others state their goal to be the building up of the corporate life of the Church or of some part of it; again the goal is defined as the «communication of the vital and redeeming doctrines of Scriptures,» or it is otherwise described by reference to the Bible as the ultimate source of all that is to be taught and preached.

Just as the state is called by God to an irrevocable task of doing public justice, so also is the institutional church called by God to proclaim the Gospel in its fullness, administer the sacraments and to ensure that its members are living up to their calling before the face of God, who has redeemed them in Jesus Christ.

So in the Book of Daniel we find this conviction stated: «Many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt,» (Daniel 12:2) and in two late Isaian passages a similar expectation is expressed: «He hath swallowed up death for ever; and the Lord Yahweh will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the reproach of his people will he take away from off all the earth: for Yahweh hath spoken it»; (Isaiah 25:8) «Thy dead shall live; my dead bodies shall arise.

Always in the background is the persistent idea of Sheol, but as in the Greek Orphic cults Hades became an intermediate state where souls were punished and purged until, fully cleansed, they could ascend to the blessed life with God, so Sheol among the Jews became intermediate and preparatory, leading up to the judgment day and its eternal awards.

Heads up, we have today over 29 states that are in drought, and this too has been prophesied by YHWH, that would happen, in many scriptures, from His wrath in Jeremiah 25: 13 - 38, of us giving His praise to these other idols, strange gods, that are not of His peace, and righteousness, of the law of life, the 10 commandments.
