Here are a new things we do: A month ago we bought a new energy saving front -
loader washer and gas dryer.
I had no idea you were supposed to leave the front
loader washer open.
Also, a few years ago, we bought a new fancy front
loader washer, and it was dead within a couple of years.
We have a front
loader washer and dryer on a pedestal with drawers and those drawers do come in handy!
I have a nook half way along my passage as a laundry with room for front -
loader washer / dryer, has a sink and cupboard, it's very handy and a huge space saver.
The yank - yank - yank washing mechanism of an HE top
loader washer is tougher on the underwire - bra - like plastic parts but they still have the warranty.
Aren't front
loader washer and dryers the best?
Some of the first generation font
loader washers (2000 - 2001 models) didn't clean well and some of the first HE top loaders had issues, but those are exceptions.

Our
washer is actually a top -
loader, but our dryer is front load.
There is no «prewash» cycle on my
washer (the top
loader gave out, so we got a front
loader, and there is no quick wash on mine), so I do a full heavy duty cycle with Prewash in cold, followed by a normal cycle with Superwash in hot.
Front load
washers typically use less water than top
loaders.
I have a top
loader, so I would leave the top open and let the
washer fill, then agitate them for a minute or two, open the top again and let them soak for 15 - 20 minutes before closing the top and allowing the rinse cycle to finish.
Stripping is easiest in older top - loading
washers since you can open the lid partway through the cycle to check everything but you can effectively strip diapers using front -
loaders or newer top
loaders that lock — it may take a few extra loads to be sure they are done.
(I don't have a great fancy HE
washer either, just a standard ancient - ish top
loader.)
Karen's thoughts: My perfect
washer doesn't exist but it would be the wash cycle of the old 2017 or older Speed Queen, (keep manual controls not computer controls) and the drum of the HE top
loader.
If you are shopping for a
washer, standard, simple top -
loader cleans best but will probably wear out fabrics faster than the more gentle HE machines.

washer, and begin a warm presoak cycle (with added towel, if it's a front
loader).
However, it takes twice as much detergent for use in a standard
washer versus a front
loader.

washer, we thought, «Ooh, it's a top -
loader with all the style of the latest front -
loaders.»
Like the PP, I like the idea of front
loaders, but mostly I need my
washer to be reliable and low maintenance.
We have a different
washer and I have occasionally cleaned out the rim (it's a front
loader) but I haven't run bleach through it.
2 Use a front - loading
washer (a top -
loader isn't suited for fully submerging a pillow).
