But I've written a number of
articles about how it is actually possible and people have
discharged their private and federal student
loan debt.
Under the hardship provision, after five years you can apply to court to have the student
loan discharged, provided you can demonstrate hardship (see the
articles referenced above for more details).
Under federal law, student
loan debt is only
discharged if the repayment would cause the debtor «undue hardship,» which, as the
article points out, is extremely hard to meet.
