Tracts of land planted with commercial seeds are pushing out
local crop varieties and erasing the knowledge gained from 10,000 years of farming.

The
local cultivation practices currently followed for conventional rice
varieties, including the application of fertilizer,
crop protection products, and labor, are directly applicable to the cultivation of those
varieties containing the GR2E nutritional trait.
Researchers from Radboud University in the Netherlands found that in the two decades since Dutch farmers began using the pesticide on a
variety of
crops, the birds» population declined by an average of 3.5 percent annually in farmlands where
local water levels contained high concentrations of the chemical.

local pathogens and are naturally resistant to various diseases, enabling farmers to juggle different
varieties of different
crops in order to stay one step ahead of the plant diseases.

The Bean and Grain Project has since worked with
local farmers to transition help them transition from grass seed cultivation to a more diverse
variety of staple
crops after prices collapsed.
A diverse mix of potential adaptation strategies, such as
crop breeding, changing
crop varieties, adjusting planting time, water management, diversification of
crops and a host of indigenous practices will all be applicable within
local contexts.
Regardless of the safety of GM
crops, do we want a world in which our agriculture is ruled (or continued to be ruled as in the US) by large corporations, the cultivation of only a small
variety of
crops planted everywhere without regard for tradition or
local conditions, the continued heavy dependence on chemical inputs?
