I have been spoiled by
a local used book store, where selective purchases have enabled me to fill a bookcase with $ 1 - $ 2 hardbounds of high - quality history and literature.
The local used book store will only give cash for hardcovers and trade paperbacks, with a store credit for mass market paperbacks.
That being said, last year I picked up a book at

books for 25 cents each, to give out at Halloween.

The BN and deceased Borders sucked the life out of my favorite
local independent bookstores and the vast selection in the
used book store 3 miles from me is very appealing.
As always, though, if you have a
local mystery
book store, I encourage you to
use them as your first choice.

Both eBook
stores also let you access
books from your
local library for free, and lend
books to friends who also
use a Nook or Kindle.
For physical
books I
use my
local Barnes & Noble or grocery
store.
While Thackeray's, and many
stores like it, mainly sold new
books, the corporate giant of Amazon also eviscerated most of the
local used bookstores.
While
book discussion is huge on the internet, readers are still
used to going to their
local book store to browse the selection before going back home to purchase it online.
Add to that the fear that such a branch might actually open and trample
local competition and... somehow, slowly, most ebooks
stores replaced Adobe DRM with a hassle free watermark on their epubs and mobis, plus in some
stores you can
use a send - to - kindle function, so there's no need to sideload
books via USB (I think ARe has this function now as well).
I found myself in an interesting place in Yellow Springs, OH not too long ago: some years back, a
local comic shop merged with a
used book store, the customer overlap was there, the content overlap was there, and it was a natural fit.
