We have a completely fenced field (no worries of dogs running off or
loose dogs interfering on the course), experience running dogs of almost every breed (including the super fast sighthounds) and guidance from those that have been active in lure coursing for MANY years (special thanks to Pat and Jim, our mentors!).

If left
loose, it may not be effective and, if too tight, it can
interfere with the
dog's movement especially when swimming.
Ditto for a
dog loose inside a vehicle, where he can
interfere with the driver and cause an accident, or become a flying object in case of an accident — or even dive out of an open window.
