David is an established writer, with an established platform and fanbase, who knows
a lot about book design and production, and making a print book probably isn't that big a deal for him.

But the short answer for anyone who doesn't want to buy a

There are a
lot of mistaken assumptions
about how
book covers are supposed to look, and that has led to thousands of badly
designed indie published
books.
But beware publishers who charge a
lot (over $ 2000ish) for
design and formatting... they are making money on the front end and may not care
about how well the
book actually sells.

There are
lots of ways to build a platform quickly and sell a shit - ton of
books: but you need a well
designed product, you need a
book readers will enjoy, and it helps to write in genres or
about topics that are popular.
And I think Hugh Howey can teach us a
lot about book cover
design, but not by sharing his
design instincts (fun and artistic, creative like his
books, but making a statement
about the author, rather than conforming to industry
design standards based on what actually moves
books).
I talk a
lot about book cover
design, but when you start out with that blank canvas and your eager imagination, you're bound to get lost in the possibilities of what to put on your
book cover.
When you are preparing to publish a
book, think carefully
about whether the cost of a
book design is truly a «cost» or whether it's an «investment» in the
book you've put so much into, and on which you may have a
lot riding.

I've talked before
about self - publishing, how it's been a huge boon to my writing career, but also how authors should temper their expectations: realize that writing, editing,
designing a cover for, formatting and converting, and marketing a self - published
book is a
lot of hard work, and is less likely than the lottery to make you rich.
And furthermore, most
book cover designers are good designers but don't know a
lot about designing covers that actually sell a shitload of
books.
Lots of people talk
about book design, publishing and marketing.
A
lot of small presses have good intentions but actually know nothing
about book design or
book marketing, which means you're giving them the lion's share of profits but they can't help you sell the
book.
Feedback on mediocre covers won't lead to a better cover, unless you're getting feedback from really brilliant cover designers, who know a
lot about using
design to sell
books.
I wrote a
lot about my decorating process and tips for
designing a home, and of course took many photos of this house for the
book, so I can hardly wait for you to see it and hold it in your hands!
A
lot of other
design books I read you don't seem to get that much out of, or I come out the other side more confused
about what «style» pigeon hole I'm meant to be shoved in this season.
