It's clear from the beginning that a
lot of effort has gone into Nine Parchments» aesthetics, skill trees and overall progression, but this comes at a price to what you will spend most time in the game doing: killing wave after wave of
enemies, with that becoming
less and
less fun each time.
It makes combat a
lot less obvious to read on a purely visual basis, and you'll find yourself feeling your way through encounters without the knowledge that your character has an immediate advantage over an
enemy.

Brigades can attack at will with little regard to their defense and dish out loads of damage while sustaining
lots of damage or can focus on their defense so as not to sustain too much damage too quickly while dishing out slightly
less damage to
enemies.
This means that after you have faced off with a certain
enemy type a few times, you will begin to learn it's attack pattern — meaning that you can almost pre-empt
enemy movements which makes battles a
lot less difficult.
If you enjoy active tower defense games and you have fun splitting your attention between yourself, your towers and the
enemy types, then this is a
lot of fun for
less than $ 20.
Throw in a a bunch of
enemy types (the meteor showers being my favorite),
lots of power - ups, several different gameplay modes, various challenges, and leaderboards galore and you have a very intelligent and fun reworking of one of gaming's
less popular old classics.
As well as being able to level up your Hero, upgrade their stats and even create a whole range of crests that work a
lot like the badges from Hyrule Warriors, as they can be used to allow your character to learn more combos, take
less damage from
enemies of various types and even learn skills, they can also be promoted to new classes.
Doing this gives you the opportunity to Fast Travel to other activated Forge Towers, thus saving you a
lot of time traveling, along with
less enemy encounters along the way.
I much preferred heading in the direction of power, since it made dealing with
enemies a
lot less hassle.
If the opportunity arises, try using a quick turn to ram an
enemy ship to cause them a
lot of damage (and
less to you — but be ready to do quick repairs).
