I've been writing about creating
ebooks for a while and it occurred to me that I've tried to cover a
lot of the edge - case scenarios: nice
formatting, drop caps, special fonts, audio, video, fixed layout, poetry, and more.
I've written several posts about
eBook formatting because there's a
lot of confusion out there.
There is also a
lot of freeware, sites and videos online that tell you how to
format an
ebook.
Finally, a
lot of readers are still reading
ebooks in PDF file
format, because they just don't care about the benefits
of reflowable text (EPUB + KF8,
formats they've never heard
of).
If however you're the kind
of user who has
lots of eBooks / documents in varying
formats then you'll be more than happy with the BeBook.
Even today, many
eBook readers do not go a whole
lot further than this, which creates a very unique set
of challenges when you
format eBooks.

At BEA last week I spent a
lot of time with publishers looking for
eBook fixed layout

of fixed layout support for dedicated devices and cross-platform apps.
Warshaw talked about some
of the reasons why there isn't as much focus on digital content for teen readers since a
lot of the non-fiction
format doesn't come through as easily in
ebooks as it does for other types

lot of time on Kindle hitting the «Tell the publisher you want this in Kindle» on my old favs that aren't in
ebook format yet.
As if that's not bad enough a
lot of the time
ebooks that you spend good money on are horribly
formatted by the author or publisher, and if the
ebook has DRM there's not much you can do about it.

I've been busy with
lots of projects lately, but I didn't want to neglect to get my first two Quick & Easy Guides into
ebook formats.
Lots of apps support the same
ebook formats, and each offers different features.
Formatting for print and
eBook takes a
lot of time, and for that reason alone many authors turn to professional formatters.
Retailers like Powells.com, Christianbook.com, etc. all lose a
lot of transactions because
of their
eBook sales are limited by file
format.
You can certainly use PDFs for
ebooks and there's still a market for this, especially for
ebooks which need to retain
formatting (
lots of tables, complex layout, etc), or where you want to allow people to print easily from the
ebook.
Right now, we have
lots of options which protect
ebook access via established distribution chains and publisher agreements — but they also limit it through DRM, restricted
format support, and outright refusal by some publishers to sell
ebooks to libraries.
Since this seems such a hot topic, and since a
lot of people seem to come to this blog for that tutorial in particular, I have set up a box in the upper right hand corner that links directly to the tutorial, because with new posts pushing the
eBook formatting series further and further back, it actually became a little tedious to locate.
What's more, there are a
lot of trad - pub books that aren't available at all in
ebook format in my region.
And this makes me
lots of money in
eBook format.
The Android operating system makes it a
lot more versatile than a typical E Ink
ebook reader, giving the device the ability to support any
ebook format via apps, and not just
ebooks but all forms
of digital reading from web browsing to comics and magazines.
While there are a
lot of books on the Open Library site, I find it harder to navigate compared to others as it doesn't have the «in your face» Kindle -
format eBooks.
Follow the links for the free book section, which as I type up this post has almost 65,000 free books in the Kindle
format — sometimes a whole heck
of a
lot more — books for free in many
eBook formats, including your Kindle.
I expect it to to support ePub flavors soon, and I'm a
lot more excited about the support
of older DRM
formats because I have a huge investment there — I have access to the tools to strip, but don't care to have to bother for something like 2500 DRM'd
ebooks.
