With Alaska and British Airlines you get triple miles for
airfare only, which means you'd have to spend a
lot on plane tickets to earn a decent number of miles.
There are
lots of other companies out there who specialize in around the world tickets (often called multi-stop
airfare), and those same rules (like having to travel in one direction around the world, or having a cap
on mileage traveled or number of stops) often don't apply.
So if you are someone who spends a good share of their revenue
on airfare, and are OK booking prepaid hotels through AmexTravel, then 5x points can provide a
lot of value and it will be a no brainer.
Now, Im pretty sure those calculations (from 2014) did not factor in the new bonus category of 2x
on dining
on the PRG and I don't think they factored in the potential for 4x
on airfare, so it's quite possible that the PRG could outdo the EDP or at least make the comparison a
lot closer.
Having the flexibility to use your miles
on any travel purchase makes it a
lot easier to purchase
airfare and hotels and put your itinerary together.
The 5X
on airfare can be nice but it still won't be worth it to ditch the Reserve's 3X
on travel for a
lot of people (see my article here
on keeping both the Sapphire Reserve and the Platinum).
The Platinum's 5X
on airfare is fantastic but for people who fly with points most of the time and eat out a
lot, there's not much earning potential with the Platinum, so the Prestige wins this.
That's a problem with no one right answer, but I would use the Travelocity card if I booked a
lot of reimbursable business flights, and earn a $ 400 rebate for every $ 6,667 I spent
on airfare.
But even beyond the first year, you could justify the $ 450 cost if you fly a
lot since it also earns 5x
on airfare now.
Or, let's say a
lot of your spending is
on travel, but includes
airfare and hotels and rental cars.

These days, hotels and even rental car agencies are catching
on to the «non-refundable» way of doing business, so it's not only the
airfare you could lose if you have to cancel your trip, you could lose a whole
lot more.
