love with each other, in the unwelcome number on the scale, in the sounding out of vowels during bedtime book reading, in the dust and stink and heat of a tent city in Port au Prince, in the beauty of a soccer game in the Haitian dust, in the
listening to someone else's
story, in the telling of my own brokenness, in the repentance, in the secret telling and the secret keeping, in the suffering and the mourning, in the late nights tending sick babies, in confronting fears, in the all of a life.
On her blog, and in this wonderful book, Sarah does what all good storytellers do: she gives us permission — permission
to laugh, permission
to question, permission
to slow down a bit, permission
to listen, permission
to confront our fears, permission
to share our own
stories with more bravery and
love.
We are hungry for true community, a place
to tell our
stories and
listen to another,
to love well.
Only then can we hope
to know those wonderful grace - filled moments; times when through prayer and song,
listening to and reciting the familiar words of grace and the
stories of redemption, our hearts soar; times when we are caught up in the stream of
love — when we sing praise
to God with all our hearts and minds and souls and strength — which flows from us
to God through the ministry of Christ and his people and which we return
to God with prayer and praise.
Listening with full attention and commitment
to another person's
story is perhaps the first step in learning
to love them.
Listening to both of their
stories and holding them all gently with intention — and hopefully a bit of grace — has transformed me because it's made me realise that the right
story is always the real
story, God's overarching
story that
Love wins.
This week alone, I have
listened to stories of bitterness and unforgiveness, adoption struggles, death and sickness, betrayal and addictions, loss and grief, sleepless nights with sick children, and longings unfulfilled in the hearts and lives of people I
love and there are more questions than answers.
I enjoyed
listening to your
story, especially about the yoga and the ayurvedic stuff — would

stories that my kids would
