For sure this tablet may not set any benchmark tests on fire, but for a
super low end tablet it may be worth it.
While I had a pretty good sense that these would be
low end tablet when I saw the specs, I wasn't sure just how cheap they would be.
The Pandigital Nova is the most recent entrant to the ultra competitive market
of lower end tablet computers.
Archos has been very busy this year launching a slew of
lower end tablet computers to try and satiate the thirst of many a tablet fiend.
So even
in lower end tablets where resistive touchscreen displays rule the roost, this is a great deal for Onyx International.
This is great, because most
low end tablets do not have access to the Google Android Market, but do have access to Youtube.
E-ink (at least in it's current technological form) is truly only relevant in the stand alone ereader market which is quickly being surpassed by very low
priced low end tablets.
Apple's
current low end tablet is the 9.7 - inch iPad announced in March for $ 329, but the company may be planning something even more aggressive for 2018.
Graph the low end market and you see it trending towards zero, to that day when an Amazon or a Google will likely offer
you a low end tablet for free, perhaps as part of your Amazon Prime subscription or if you agree to pay for Google Drive.
But in the long run, if you look at every iPad purchaser as a new subscriber to the Apple ecosystem of hardware and software services, there's value in fighting for every additional user versus Google or Amazon in
the low end tablet market.
Most customers who buy
a low end tablet will stay in that producer's ecosystem for a while, at least a year.
Think of it as
the lower end tablet that's better than any other tablet except for the new iPad.
As we have written previously, color eReaders in our opinion will take the majority of the tablet market share beneath the iPad because of price and content advantages (see 3/15/11 DF note: AMZN: Filling
the low end tablet niche).
Excluding Lenovo's attempt at getting into
the lower end tablet spectrum and Huawei's launch of the Matebook (which technically isn't a tablet), tablet devices weren't even mentioned by the likes of Samsung, Sony, HTC or LG.
The colors and viewing angles are surprisingly good for such
a low end tablet.
Samsung managed to attract a good number of these consumers by launching
their low end tablet called the Samsung Galaxy tab 2 for just under Rs. 20,000.
