If I had lucked out and got an agent for my first novel, a vampire romantic suspense, and it had sold to a publisher, and if it had sold only 3,000 copies in the first months, (i.e. being with a publisher wouldn't have led to an increase in sales due to the magic fairy pixie dust I'm told that publishers employ), I would never have published the second or third book in the series and likely would have been dropped by the publisher for publishing a «dud».
Once these external forces intervene to boost a book's sales figures a feedback cycle can be started in which WoM reinforces the effect of these external influencers and in turn, with luck, attracts more recommendations by people with clout or by the algorithms but I don't believe that in most genres WoM alone can do the job.
I can say with certainty that «luck» could not possibly have put that book in front of the staggering number of people that would result in 39,000 sales in just over 30 days on the market.
