The phrase
"luminous galaxies" refers to galaxies that are very bright and shiny. They emit a lot of light and can be easily seen in the night sky.
Full definition
In previous observations we could only see the most
luminous galaxies in the distant past, and now we can look at more normal galaxies.
The team discovered an exceptionally
luminous galaxy more than 13 billion years in the past and determined its exact distance from Earth using the powerful MOSFIRE instrument on the W.M. Keck Observatory's 10 - meter telescope, in Hawaii.

Each clump has brightness comparable to a typical
luminous galaxy at the epoch of Himiko, when the Universe was only 800 million years old.
Two of them — a more extensive survey
of luminous galaxies, intended to tease out more information about galaxy clustering on large scales, and a more sensitive search for the cannibalized remnants of dwarf galaxies — will extend recent findings from the second Sloan survey.
Astronomers have discovered the most
luminous galaxy ever found, shining with the equivalence of 300 trillion suns from the far side of the visible universe.
Astronomers believe that many of these objects have collided and merged with each other over time to grow into the giant and
luminous galaxies seen today (more on 18 galaxies about 11 billion ly away).
Disney came to realize that the Parkes observations lacked the resolution, the fineness of detail, to make out dim galaxies tightly bunched
with luminous galaxies.
They found six times as many of the most
luminous galaxies in this epoch compared to earlier surveys, while the dimmer ones were about twice as numerous as previously thought, according to findings published 22 September in Nature.
«Duo of titanic galaxies captured in extreme starbursting merger: Pair of exceptionally rare hyper -
luminous galaxies discovered with ALMA.»
The team discovered an exceptionally
luminous galaxy more than 13 billion years in the past and determined its exact distance from Earth using the combined data from NASA's Hubble and Spitzer space telescopes, and the Keck I 10 - meter telescope at the W. M. Keck Observatory in Hawaii.
«We found in a related study with WISE that as many as half of the
most luminous galaxies only show up well in infrared light,» Tsai said.
Though intriguing, next to the billions of known
luminous galaxies, these hundreds of dim ones still didn't amount to a hill of beans, cosmically speaking.
Using this data covering an incredible 1/4 of the entire sky, astronomers created the map above of 900,000
luminous galaxies: ones that are brighter than usual.
Many distant quasars —
luminous galaxies, thought to be powered by large central black holes — are known to contain warm dust, which glows at infrared wavelengths.
It resides in
a luminous galaxy, or quasar, so far away that its light took 13 billion years to reach Earth.
Previously astronomers observed steady movements among the «brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs),» which — as the name implies — are the «most
luminous galaxies in the universe.»
Most galaxies are small and faint so only
the luminous galaxies are seen at great distances.
The more
luminous a galaxy, the more mass it possesses (see How Stars Work).
The hyper -
luminous galaxies are located 13 billion light years away when the universe was in its infancy.
Therefore, the researchers consider that they managed to capture more like «normal» galaxies, which had been impossible to detect up to now, than extremely bright «submillimeter -
luminous galaxies».
Dark matter is invisible, so only
the luminous galaxies can be seen directly.
The most
luminous galaxies are those that contain quasars...
When a sufficient amount of dark matter has gathered, it attracts ordinary matter (mostly hydrogen and helium gas) to form stars that may eventually form
a luminous galaxy at the core.
