Recent studies have revealed volatile material embedded in
lunar volcanic glass collected by Apollo astronauts.
Alberto Saal of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, and colleagues re-examined
lunar volcanic rocks collected in the 1970s during the Apollo 15 and 17 missions.
Although other volatiles were previously detected in
the lunar volcanic glasses and melt inclusions, the measurement of carbon remained elusive due to the high detection limits of the available analytical techniques.
That view began to change in 2008, when researchers found water inside tiny spheres of
lunar volcanic glass.
For example, the researchers found higher - than - average concentrations of water in
lunar volcanic deposits near the Moon's equator, where background water in the soil is scarce.
