lunch payment from the government is not, in many cases, enough to cover the costs of putting that
meal on the table, and more revenue has to come from somewhere.
Independent research shows that a majority of American kids like healthier school
lunches, the number of students that like their
meals is growing, and that updated
meal standards are working to help improve students»
health.
Clearly such foods are not offering the «highest level of nutrition» possible, but as long as they're sold in our
lunch rooms, kids like the one above will make an entire
meal out of them — to the detriment of their own
health and their ability to learn effectively in the classroom.
Perhaps we can not meet taste and
health goals on a daily dish basis, but why not, as we dietitians promote, look at the overall weekly plan and feel we have made steps forward towards giving our children healthy school
lunch meal options that also taste good.
Reserving at least 30 minutes for
lunch at appropriate time, an pleasant
lunch area with enough seats, having chance to wash hands before eating etc. are ways for school to demonstrate an approach based appreciation of school
meals and food and promotion of
health and well - being.
Maybe they won't eat a healthy
lunch box
meal every day of the week, but replacing cafeteria food with a healthy
meal from home can do wonders for their
health, how well they concentrate in afternoon classes, and the amount of energy they have left when they return home.
Effective food policy actions are part of a comprehensive approach to improving nutrition environments, defined as those factors that influence food access.1 Improvements in the nutritional quality of all foods and beverages served and sold in schools have been recommended to protect the nutritional
health of children, especially children who live in low - resource communities.2 As legislated by the US Congress, the 2010 Healthy Hunger - Free Kids Act (HHFKA) updated the
meal patterns and nutrition standards for the National School
Lunch Program and the School Breakfast Program to align with the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans.3 The revised standards, which took effect at the beginning of the 2012 - 2013 school year, increased the availability of whole grains, vegetables, and fruits and specified weekly requirements for beans / peas as well as dark green, red / orange, starchy, and other vegetables.

meals most days and send a healthy

Congress has failed to pass Child Nutrition Reauthorization that is now over a year past due and even if it had passed, would only have allocated 4 1/2 to 6 cents additional funds per student, so even for the mere pennies per
lunch that we could have added to the current $ 2.72 that we spend on school
meals, our elected officials couldn't come together for the
health of our children.

meals to all students — including in the summer months — would reduce childhood hunger and improve children's
