I have a very responsible client who has a cat that got
lungworms in suburban Virginia.
A fecal examination is the most common way to diagnose
lungworms in dogs.
Because lungworms typically reside in this area, their presence may be inadvertently diagnosed through the trachea wash by the presence of
lungworms in the sample.
Diagnosing lungworm can be time consuming and take several different samples and tests to be sure that there are
lungworms in your puppy's respiratory system.
In order to diagnose
lungworm in your puppy he needs to be examined by your veterinarian who will do one, or more, of these tests:

in Australian cane toads so far are Rhabdias pseudosphaerocephala - a South American species!

Generally,
lungworms can't be transmitted directly from one pup / dog to another, but if they live
in the same environment then they're both at risk from the same source of contamination.
Medications used to prevent / treat a
lungworm infection
in puppies can include Ivermectin, Febendazole and Selamectin.
The way
in which
lungworms are transmitted varies depending on the individual type of
lungworm.
More commonly seen
in livestock such as cattle, sheep and goats,
lungworm infections are frequently the cause of livestock losses throughout the world.
Causing symptoms similar to those of several other varied conditions, determining
lungworms to be the cause of respiratory problems
in dogs can be difficult and prolonged.
However, because
lungworms are not terribly common
in dogs, and there are many other, much more frequent causes for these same symptoms, a process of elimination must take place to diagnose the cause and treat the underlying condition.
There are many types of
lungworms identified, which
in varying ways infect animals and migrate to the lungs and lower respiratory tract of their chosen host, causing a variety of respiratory problems such as bronchitis and pneumonia.
Before
lungworms should be considered as a cause for coughing
in younger (less than 2 year old) dog, the following conditions should also be considered, as they are far more widespread.
Cough is less often due to heart disease
in cats, although heartworm disease, asthma, bronchitis and
lungworms are all common causes of cough
in cats.
Lungworms: found
in the lungs of cats.
In some cases, special tests will be performed on stool samples, looking for evidence of
lungworms.
Finally, the veterinarian may order a fecal exam to rule out the presence of
lungworm, a parasite that can live
in the feline bronchi and cause asthmatic symptoms.
Lungworm is extremely serious and causes signs of cardiac and respiratory disease as well as hemorrhaging
in the internal organs.
Lungworms are commonly found
in wild caught chameleons.
External mites (acariasis) are not a big problem
in chameleons so I will limit this discussion to intestinal parasites, hemoparasites (
in the blood) and
lungworms, with a brief mention of subcutaneous filarial worms.

lungworms, heartworms and a protozoan parasite called toxoplasma gondii.
