Unlike estrogen, progesterone is
not a generic name but is the name of the hormone produced by the corpus
luteum after ovulation, and in smaller quantities by the adrenal gland.
But if an anovulatory cycle occurs, or the corpus
luteum fails to secrete sufficient progesterone, known as a defective luteal phase, progesterone will
not rise.
When conception does
not occur the corpus
luteum deteriorates and no longer impacts hormone levels.
If conception does
