Most dogs that develop
luxating patellas appear normal
at birth and as puppies.
Some veterinarians believe that a dog whose
patella rides too high on its leg (
patella alta) is
at higher risk of medial patellar luxation (MPL)(ref) and that those that have
patellas that ride too low (
patella baja) is more likely to
luxate laterally (to the outside).
Should your Havanese have a
luxating patella it may show signs of lameness or refuse to bear weight on his / her knee.This may happen only occasionally or frequenetly depending on the severity of the
patella luxation and also the activity (ies) your Havanese is doing
at the time.
For some dogs the pain and discomfort of a
luxating patella can force them to not walk
at all, or
at the very least attempt to walk solely on their front legs as they keep their hind legs in the air.
Thankfully, both his
luxating patellas and his hip dysplasia do not require surgery
at this time.
