Streaming TV show and movie provider Hulu on Thursday announced it has
made its Hulu Plus service on seven new Android tablets.
It seems that Hulu is starting to be popular again, so ABC and FOX must once again take up arms in their seemingly endless battle to
make Hulu as bad as a streaming internet television provider can be.
That makes Hulu the only service with a one - two punch of live TV and also a binge - friendly streaming selection.
Not exact matches
Hulu — which is owned jointly by CBS rivals Walt Disney, 21st Century Fox, Comcast, and Time Warner —
made a similar move less than a year ago, when the service offered subscribers the option of paying a few dollars more per month for an ad - free experience.
Hulu will also
make the entire Academy Awards ceremony available for streaming on Monday, if you're willing to wait until the day after.
Today, Volk - Weiss licenses programs to established «real - time,» or «linear,» cable channels, like HBO, Showtime, and Epix; streaming video on - demand channels, like Netflix,
Hulu, Amazon, and Seeso, NBCUniversal's new comedy subscription service (and increasingly, services from the linear channels); over-the-top-device companies like Roku, Microsoft (which
makes Xbox), Sony (PlayStation), and Apple (Apple TV); and satellite - radio channel Sirius XM.
It
made $ 500 million on deals with Netflix,
Hulu and Amazon and that should only grow in 2014.
Hulu, meanwhile, is largely trying to squeeze live TV into its existing video on - demand service, instead of
making live the number one focus.
Ultimately,
Hulu is
making a skinny bundle that costs around $ 40, just like its peers.
Irving pointed to
Hulu's experience in the market and a partnership with streaming tech company MLB Advanced Media — which works with Vue — as reasons to think it'll avoid those troubles, but also said it is investing in another «set of partnerships» related to streaming tech to
make things faster.
Hulu seems to be focused more on upselling its existing subscribers more than pulling in tons of new people, so keeping this sort of nonlinear interface would
make sense.
Hulu CEO Mike Hopkins
made his comments to CNBC on Thursday from the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
The fact that Disney and Fox are involved in this new offering
makes sense because they are co-owners of
Hulu.
Hulu, meanwhile,
made Emmy history as a streaming service winning the night's biggest award, while actress Elisabeth Moss also picked up her first Emmy (after being nominated seven times before, but never winning, for Mad Men and Top of the Lake) in the Best Actress category for The Handmaid's Tale.
One is Time Warner Cable, which had offered to
make an equity investment in
Hulu, two sources told Reuters.
There is room for
Hulu to
make a dent.
Hulu didn't win the most Emmy awards on Sunday night, but the streaming service's big night was bright enough to let Hollywood know that Amazon and Netflix are no longer the only digital players
making noise on the awards circuit.
Comcast is restricted from
making business decisions related to
Hulu as part of its settlement with the U.S. government when it acquired NBC Universal.
The big question was whether
Hulu's product would be able to
make a splash in a 2017 streaming TV market already crammed with the likes of AT&T, Dish, Sony, and perhaps YouTube and Amazon.
But if Disney decides to muscle the other companies out, it may mean they will pull their content off
Hulu's on - demand or live TV service — which would
make it a less appealing service.
This fact gives Amazon an advantage over competitors like Netflix,
Hulu, and HBO, who are trying to use premium video to
make money directly — not by using it to sell more shoes.
But, it has done pretty well in DVR viewing and online viewing — another reason a
Hulu deal
makes sense.
It's no secret that «The Mindy Project» has never been a ratings barn - burner, but it has done pretty well in DVR viewing and online viewing — which again

Hulu (Disney would have a controlling stake after the merger; Comcast was similarly restricted after acquiring NBC Universal, but there the concern was more about Comcast's conflict of interest with regards to its cable TV business competing with
Hulu).
To
make ads more relevant and personalized,
Hulu is testing dynamic ad insertion, which serves different ads to different audiences based on their characteristics.
By that point,
Hulu will easily have more than 12 million subscribers,
making it an obvious place to piggyback Disney's new streaming business.
But now a single company will own more than half of the service, which
makes it less likely the other owners, specifically NBC parent Comcast *, will want to continue selling its shows to
Hulu.
The memo also says that the reason for these changes is that
Hulu Plus has just been too successful for its own good, which means it's time for the powers that be to remind everyone that, regardless of whatever hippy technological advances humanity has
made in terms of streaming video, nature intended television to be watched on actual televisions, at certain times, with certain commercial breaks, and that's not going to change on their watch...
