made dumplings at home but am eager to try (summer project!).

dumplings, I only like to
make 8 to 10
at a time.
And as if all those roasted vegetable flavors weren't enough, we add gnocchi because we just love those little cheek - pinching potato
dumplings, plus a good dose of basil pesto — extra special bonus points if you
made homemade pesto while basil was
at its peak back in the summer — and a big handful of seasonal greens because, healthy January is here!
As an East Asian who has
made and observed the
making of
dumplings many more times than I have microwaved a bowl of mac and cheese, I will say these do not resemble «
dumplings»
at the very least.
If I
made it again — I think I might add in additional cup or two of miso broth
at the end — and parhaps some tiny shrimp — or gyoza
dumplings — and
make it more of a soup.
I chose to
make 24 fat
dumplings so I put
at least 1 tablespoon in each 3 1/4» diameter wrapper, and even when the filling oozed to the edge, the dough still pinched together just fine.
The only things I can think of that I didn't differently: used homemade veg broth I had in the freezer (I'm vegetarian though my husband isn't and he thought the soup was great) used mixed dried mushrooms (you can get a large amount from costco for not too much - I keep them on hand for all my dried mushroom needs) did a healthy glug of sherry (more than the recipe) into the mushrooms when they were done sauteeing added spinach
at the end to the soup For the
dumplings, the only thing I did that was different than what many would do is use an egg from one of my hens - other than that I
made them just as other people did but mine were full of flavor and could be eaten plain.
Chili is best when
made at least 1 day ahead, without
dumplings and cilantro, and can be
made 2 days ahead and cooled completely, uncovered, then chilled, covered.
It's best to do that the day before but keeping mashed potatoes
at least for 1 hour in the fridge before
making the
dumplings will also work.
Unlike others of their
dumpling brethren, they require only basic ingredients to
make at home and no special equipment.
Believe it or not, you can
make delicate, addictive soup
dumplings at home.
And although I never
made soup
dumplings again after that party (they were a real... labor of love) and have definitely lost
at least six soup spoons, the bamboo steamer has since become one of my most - used kitchen tools.
