I have used both crystals and powder and it works the same either way since you will be dissolving it in liquid for soap making anyway.
I actually pretty much almost exclusively make this recipe these days, and don't really bother making the liquid Castile soap made with olive oil, or the mixed Dr. Bronner's Copycat liquid Castile soap.
