The recently - launched August journal is a «new kind of travel
magazine: Each issue focuses on one location, immersing the reader in its rich
art, architecture, and design scene, and sharing encounters with locals, their habits, and their pleasures — in other
words, the sights and souls that form the fabric of each
Meticulously constructed from material that is often used to support, rather than create,
art in the studio (
words, tape, glassine,
magazines), the images conceptually and materially consider the complicated and fraught nature of artistic creation.
The dung balls soon found their way into Ofili's painting, a development that the artist considered exciting enough to take out a quarter - page ad in
art magazine Frieze that simply consisted of the
words «ELEPHANT SHIT.»
Much of the early resistance to it was flagrantly misogynistic, though its male artists came in for their own share of ridicule from newspaper and
magazine critics, whose favorite dismissive
word for this
art was «brainy.»
Reinhardt, who had written for the
magazine previously, said that the article — titled «Twelve Rules for a New Academy» — «constitute [d] his last
words on
art in terms of
words.»
An independent curator, he published «Perfect
Magazine» in 2003, and curated — among many others, the exhibitions Expat -
Art Enter / EAC, Soundtrack for an Exhibition, Alan Vega's retrospective and initiated the touring A Spoken
Word Exhibition.
It comes from the Dutch
words «Nieuwe Beelding», used by Mondrian in his articles in De Stijl
magazine (1917 - 19), and in his book «Neo-Plasticisme» from 1921 onwards to describe his own type of abstract
art.
